Rebarrel 6.5x284 to 270?

A friends son shoots a left hand savage 6.5x284norma. He doesn't reload so he can't really take advantage of the cartridge. He is wanting to rebarrel it to a 270 because of the price of ammo. Is this an easy task? What all needs to be changed? I'd appreciate any help. Thanks

Let's do some math.

How much less expensive than 6.5-284 ammo is 270? $0.50/round?

How much will it cost to rebarrel? Let's use a cheap barrel, so perhaps $500 including gunsmithing.

He'd break even at 1000 rounds.
 
He could buy reloading dies and a couple hundred virgin brass and bullets and powder and primers and pay someone to load those... that's 10 boxes of hunting ammo... it should last a long time... and he would still have the dies and fired brass to reload when he wants to.
 
I was thinking $80-100 for a savage take off barrel plus what ever it would cost to swap them. Didn't realize it was that expensive.

Good point, and he could probably sell his take-off for at least the same, so then we're looking at perhaps $200 at the Gunsmith.

Just make sure the replacement barrel is left-handed as well. ;)
 
I have had 3 savage barrels changed at my local gun shop the cost was $35.00 each. A used 270 barrel will run about $60 and a new take off will be well under $100 .
 
Not sure but as mentioned above, with the fatter 284 case are the action rails wider than on the 270 action so will there be issues of the rounds jumping out of the action everytime you open the bolt? something to check on
