Rebarrel a 7400

I was not aware of any differences in action lengths on 7400's ...

what ever you want to do in the form of changing the cartridge will be more expensive on that action compared to most bolt actions because of the labour time.

You mean rebarrel from a short cartridge to a longer one? Like, say, a .308 to a .30-06? You'd likely have mag length issues.

my gunsmith tells me he is 99.9% sure that a 7400 action can be rebarreled without any major mods. someone drilled out the gas port and now it's a single shot

Drilling out the gas port may cause it to malfunction as a semi auto but it does not make it a single shot. It makes it a malfunctioning semi auto.

If the gas port was welded closed then it would be considered a bolt action. (With the operating handle a very small bolt).

To be considered a single shot the magazine opening would have to be permanently blocked so no magazine would work at all.

IIRC, Remington did not make 2 different lengths of receiver for the semi or pump rifles. The difference was in the magazine, with the shorter cartridges having a block in the mag for spacing/feeding.

Hmmmmmm Guntech~

I'd looove a semi in 444....and seeing as the .444 cart. is slightly shorter than a .308, I would surmise that 4 could be loaded in the mag (stacking the rims)

Feasable? :D

It is feasible and will be expensive and I have no interest in it...

... making a magazine function reliably will not be easy... ?$?$?$?$

Then a new barrel fitted and chambered... ?$?$?$?$

Thanks gunrunner100.. that's what my gunsmith told me....it's not a problem putting in a different barrell on, same thing as switching barrells on a 870Rem. If i switch the 7400 to a long action, i just need a new mag
