I have 4 Remington 742's, 3 are 308 and one 30-06, can these rifle be rebarrel to a 35 whelen the action look to be the same, going to sell 3 of them to fund the project if it makes sense, I know 180gr bullets will do anything I want here in NB but I am a gunnut

A 760 would be quite straightforward. A 742 much more complicated because of the gas system. Was the 742 ever made in .35? Could be as simple as a barrel swap. A .35 760 barrel could be converted.
If you could find someone to rebore it, the '06 could be converted.

Numrich in West Hurley, NY seems to buy up a lot of factory inventory. They may have Remington barrels in a variety of cartridges. But, I have to agree with Tiriaq. The 742 is an SOB to strip and very likely also to rebuild. They weren't made to be fixed easily.

The 742 is a very poor platform to invest any money in. The 7400 750 series are better designed. (the 750 come in .35 Whelen) The 742 has issues with the locking lugs chattering the receiver with use to a point that the gun is worthless.

Only in used. Remington stopped the 35 whelen(incidentally was the caliber the gun worked best in).

Rem is also stopping production of the 750 next year as far as i know as they cant compete with the AR platform for versatility and reliability.

if you want a 35 whelen get a bolt action rifle, save your money. a 743 is only good when it works and when it begins to not cooperate is a moneypit and waste of time and your funds.

I would try a WTB listing first for a 7400 in 35 W. They are not impossible to find in canada
That would be the most economical option. If nothing shows one can be had state side and brought up very reasonable
Cheers

In actual fact, rather than a platform, the 742 could be better described as a toilet. You wouldn't invest money in it but flush money down it.
Glad I found this thread guys.. I've got a 742 I've had since new and it's been ####ty for years. Took it all apart and cleaned and oiled everything ( Wasn't really dirty) Put it back together and all I can do is use it as a single shot!! Reciever is chattered. So good money after bad??
I phoned Gravel Agency yesterday and all their gunsmiths are younger then 30 yrs. old
So they have never worked on a 742
So just a waste of time and money trying to get it running????:(

does it only work as a single shot after you took it apart and cleaned it? It may be the disconnector is in the wrong position. if it is the action will not cycle.
The first round will load, fire and eject.
The 2nd round will only partially come into battery. The lugs don't seem to lock in. Trigger will fire but the round doesn;'t go off. Then unfired round will manually eject.
This is with orignal and new mags.
Receiver is well worn with the chatter marks
As others have said the gun might be wore out??

It's toast. You could peen the chattering back into a more or less defined rib, it will work for a very short period of time, then die again. Effectively, it's a boat anchor or parts donor.

It needs a new receiver more than it needs a new barrel. Get over it and cut the receiver in half, sell the remaining parts...

One last check before you cut the receiver in half.
has the trigger been disassembled at some point? if it has possibly it wasn't put back together correctly. I had this issue where the gun would only fire by manually loading the chamber. the disconnector was on top of the lever. should be as in pic

Trigger was never taken apart. I was thinking about buying a 7400 ?
Then I realized I'm spending to much time and effort on a platform that I have no confidence in??
I've got a Browning and a FNAR that work well.
So 742 may get sold as parts or find a spot in the back of the safe...
This guy is moving on... Thanks for the help guy's..
