I have a Rem 721 barrel in .300 H&H and wanted to use it to rebarrel a 700, if possible. Is the action used for the .300 Win Mag or 7mm Rem Mag sufficiently long for this? I see a nice 700 BDL on the EE that would make a great donor rifle.

I realise a .300 Win Mag is more practical, but about the only magnum cartridge that ever interested me is the .300 H&H, hence my desire to own one.

Resurrecting the old post.
Finally bought a donor rifle; a Rem 700 BDL in .300 Win Mag. What I'm hoping is that the 721 barrel can be installed and will line up such that the original sights can be left on.
This should be a fun rifle. I am looking at an elk hunt in B.C. next fall. A classy old girl like the Super Thirty is, I think, the right girl to bring to the dance.

Shouldn't be much of an issue if you have access to a lathe to get the sights to line up.
If they don't line up try swapping the recoil lugs above all make sure it headspaces with in spec.

RC is correct, the threads are identical in diameter and pitch. You will need proper tooling to get the existing barrel out of the receiver and to install the 721 bbl. This is where it gets tricky. Once in a very blue moon you will get a donor barrel that mates up perfectly with an existing receiver. Chances are very poor this will occur.

This means the chamber and shoulder will need to be altered on the donor barrel to fit at TDC and a reamer to recut the chamber to proper depth. If you don't know what your are doing, this can be a great time to ruin a perfectly good barrel. That mod 721 barrel should have a raised step on it about half way down for a set of iron sights. This step needs to be at TDC so the front and rear sight are in line with the bore and your eye from the top. I wouldn't suggest that you get the gunsmith to turn off this raised area either. Harmonics could go to hell in a hurry.

Sounds like a fun project and a great old cartridge to boot.

I have seen 700 series barrels swap with matching headspace on occasion but I have never seen any swap where the sights index... a fairly straight forward job for a gunsmith... A 300 H & H reamer will be required.
