i just buy a remington 700 adl in .270 for a steal and wanna do a semi custom in .280 or .280AI
just swiched the oem stock for a champion one very happy more robust and feel less cheap
i whant to know what is the step to change and rechamber the rifle to a .280 rem
where did you guys go to make those change and what to buy before the gunsmith
im a realoder the .270 is perfect for whitetail but here black bear are large and my hunting partner is an avid moose hunter so will make more sens to have 160/170 (heavy) 7mm bullet for my hunt

Don’t let me stand in your way but there is almost zero difference between the 270 and 280 on game. Save yourself 1000 dollars and load up some 150 or 160 partitions in the 270. If you’re going to step up, make a real step up.

To answer your question you need a 7mm barrel blank in your desired contour and about 400 bucks cash to pay your gunsmith.
 
I'm with Slimbo, there is no need to change cartridge. A 270 is fine for bear or moose. Not sure what you mean by a real set up. Your 270 is real isn't it? To sound like a broken record the often used line - a good bullet put in the proper place will work on most game. A 243 will work if you do your part. I saw a post this week on fb of a native lady that took a griz with a 243, shot it in the head. Boom done.

On the other hand, if you have the new gun itch it is perfectly reasonable to scratch that itch and switch up. $600 ish for a barrel blank and $3-500 for the gunsmith. There's a few Canadian barrel makers so you don't need to go thru the import headache from the U.S. I have a recommendation which I can not post because he is not a sponsor here and I got in trouble for mentioning him in other posts where guys asked for info on Canadian barrel makers

I took the step down route and had a 700 in 270 re-tubed to 257Roberts. I had 22" MR
contour bbl installed and had it bedded into a TI take off stock. It has taken a few deer without drama and remains to be a favorite in the safe.

A 280 will give you ZERO over a 270 except harder to find brass and ammo.
 
I have used a 280 as my main rifle since the 80's and there is no appreciable difference between it and the 270 except I have a thing for 7mm cartridges. The 280 is loaded lighter than the 270 and I sometimes use the hotter 270 data for my 280 for the same weight and type of bullet. The 280's shoulder is a bit further out than the 270 ( .050"?) for some obscure reason but obviously magazines and actions for one will fit the other. As mentioned it'll cost near $1k to rebarrel but if it's an itch you want to scratch go for it , you won't be disappointed.

Longer so you can't chamber 280 rounds in 270's is what I was always told. - dan
 
Forget the idea of screwing on another previously owned barrel - I have done so a few times - maybe one out of five will headspace correctly when snugged up - most won't. So that means fussing with the lathe to re-cut the barrel shoulder - and even then can end up having to re-cut the chamber - so that means cost of barrel vise and receiver vise, then a chamber finishing reamer, and a metal lathe - is not "cheap" to start from scratch. Unless you do not mind bench vise marks on receiver or barrel and pipe wrench gouges in the other one.

Is likely altogether different with the "Remage" type barrels - but typically you will need to figure out how to hold the recoil lug so it does not move, when the new-to-you barrel gets installed. It can be a lot of "fun" to swap out barrels and hit headspace - if you have all the toys to do so.

OP I'm going to 2nd (3rd? 5th? lol) the sentiment that going to 280 from a 270 is meaningless. A 150gr partition from a 270 will kill anything a 160-175gr bullet from a 280 will kill. For that matter, so will a premium 130gr bullet, like a TTSX or something bonded. Personally, I only load 130gr premium bullets in my 270 for hunting, and I have killed multiple black bears with it. A 130gr Hornady Interbond leaves a blood trail a blind man could follow.

Bingo. They did the same thing with 7mm WSM, making it a tiny bit longer than 270WSM so you can't chamber the bigger bullet in the smaller barrel.

There is nothing in North America that a 270 loaded with a 130 A-Frame, Partition or TTSX will not kill decisively.
Of course, there are several 140 and 150 grain bonded, monometal and Partition type bullets if you feel
better using heavier bullets. Dave.
 
It’s your money, and I agree there’s no flies on the .270 Win, just run better built bullets.

Build a 338/06 (AI) or a 35 Whelan (AI)

Got a buddy with a Whelan AI he drives 225 Partitions in excess of 2750 fps from a 22” bbl.

That’s some serious medicine right there.

277 to 284...7 thou difference, basically the same cartridge.
Something cooler like a 6.5-06 I'd be all for though lol.
 
I have re barreled 270’s to 280’s before. I just have a thing for 280’s. My vote is do it. Deer wont notice a difference even though I load mine on the hotter side. My current 280 is a rebarreled tikka and also have a Kimber 280ai. Wouldn’t change either for the world!!!
