I wouldnt think of doing that for a second if I was a leftie..... lots of great out of the box rifles available in LH... in fact, I am in te market for a new one and cant find what I want in my fave action (ruger m77 mk II)

Maybe.... but then you have a savage axxis and a timney trigger and a barrel..... just sayin'

Not putting down the rifle, just looking at the big picture. It's a $250-300 rifle and you will spend at least $500 to rebarrel and that's a low estimate. You will never get your money back. There are many better platforms to do it with.
There might be better platforms out there but none as economical. I have built 2 left handed target rifles off of Axis actions and have found them to be very accurate. One is a heavy barrel 7.62 x 39mm that puts 5 rounds into the same hole at 100m. Just built it to say I did.
The Axis is a very strong action, east to work on, simple to service. Buy one, build what you want and have fun!

OK, never lived your leftie life..... get a good scope, a decent barrel, and a stock and have fun..... not my choice if I were you, but understand why you want it......
The biggest drawbacks to the Axis for building on would be the lack of a fixed recoil lug, the 5 piece bolt and sloppy action, and the trigger. Personally owning one I would not feel too confident with a light trigger, just by the design it's not meant to be light....4-5lbs would be my cut off. The extra part recoil lug will not stay tight between the stock and the action for a long period, it will loosen up and affect accuracy.
Now I'd have no issue opening a stock barrel up if it was a simple chamber reem....thinking about doing that myself and turning the 7mm-08 into something bigger.....284Win maybe? Who knows.

axis's go on sale and can be had for under 300.00 ....... I bought a stainless one in 308 with savages rebate it was under 270 with taxes .
I wouldn't waste money on the package deal , most guys end up buying a better scope anyway .

it shouldn't be very difficult to use a regular savage recoil lug off of a small ring barrel , remove enough stock to make it fit , then bed the recoil lug to the stock

On one of the axis I had the timney was set very light. No idea what the weight was but if you touched the trigger while taking a breath it would fire. Passed the bump test and everything else just fine. Had a boyds stock and viper hs 4-16 on it. Shot very well
I see where your trying to go with this, but I can see it like this. When buying a cheap rifle and doing the upgrades. You can buy the upgrades when free money comes in hand and not having to spend it all at once if you dont have it all at once. Know what I mean?

Not actually trying to go anywhere, just find the idea hard to understand.....
And I am not in favor of the "save for something better" mentality if it keeps you out of the woods.... BUT, I am in favor of buying something and saving for something better instead of putting lipstick on a pig..... You can pick up an axxis used with a decent scope for $400-$450 if you keep your eye out for it or for $500 you can buy the rifle new and put a decent used optic on it..... save up the money instead of buying barrels and triggers, sell the Axxis, get your cash back and now you have $1000 plus to spend on a rifle.....

I for one would not put down the axis. I'm a bit of a bolt action snob, and I find design choices interesting. I horse swapped for an axis in 308win to try my hand at long range shooting. It's very interesting what Savage did to the 110 basic design to bring it down in price. They barrowed the idea of fixing the recoil lug in the stock from tikka, but most of it is pure 110. The front of the bolt minus the handle appears to be the same as the bolt in my wife's model 11.
Everyone tends to forget that even the Remington 700 was the budget rifle of the day. If they have something against a rifle built to a price point the only rifles that will satisfy are pre 64 model 70's and FN supreme. Those are both excellent guns, but there is a reason they where discontinued.

....I'm still getting over the hurt of supercub putting down the 788. I love mine and will shoot in until my kid inherits it. Great gun although as stated it was the "Savage axis of its day".
I had a similar conversation today with my dad. I've got a rem 7600 in 3006 that I picked up in a deal and have been trying to sell to no avail. So fueled by frustration and crown royal, I thought to my self. To hell with it, I'll spin on a 35 cal barrel and turn it into a 35 whelen (which they make from factory). And as my father responded "At what point do you look at a gun and say "perhaps I should just buy what I want" because it reality if I spin a whelen barrel onto it, that's going to be 500 over my cost of the rifle and I'm going to be into this gun for over a grand without optics or anything else I'd wish to do it. When it comes to resale I'm going to be scoffed at and informed it's not their problem I threw money around like confetti at a bride. Work with what you've got and only build if it makes financial sense or if you've exhausted every other option. Although I am right handed and although sympathize, cannot relate to your predicament.

if your paying 500 for a new axis , your just burning a pile of money .
right now wholesalesports has the axis for 339.00 .... and there is a thread where right now there is a 75.00 rebate on savage rifles .
this brings a brand new rifle under 300.00
these rifles shoot pretty small groups , so unless you want a non factory chambering , or going to compete in f class , there is really no need to get a aftermarket barrel .
