ya i know it will probably cost more then a new gun,
here's the thing its a model 94 30-30 made in 1896 has had about 4" cut off at some point in it's life shoots like crap but action works great was wondering about a rebarrel to another calibre 38-55 or such anyone have experience with doing this to this model what caliber would you do it in
thanks dd.

depends what you want it for. Is ammo availability a worry 32 special, 30-30, 25-35, 33win, 38-55. .. You can find bbls for around 200$, and then the gunsmiths time... I like guns I can shoot that means 30-30 for cheap ammo

"...had about 4" cut off..." What's the crown like? I suspect the receiver for a .30-30 would be too short to extract and eject a .38-55. The .38-55 case is a bit over a half inch longer.

Have Ron Smith re-bore it to 38-55 .You can either go regular bore size or the more available .375 dia.Harold

i went on a hunt for an original length barrel 26" around the same "age" in around for the 30-30 seems to be few and far between if i could get a 38-55 barrel i would be happy

I have done several of them, the easiest way is to get a take off barrel in .375, any .375 barrel will be large enough to cut off the chamber and there will be enough meat left to machine a tenon and thread it to fit the winnie, all you need is the chambering reamer and you are done . If you farm it out any competent gunsmith can do the job for you.

Back when Gun Parts Corp would still ship barrels I got a 44/40 "kit" from them, they had them in 44 mag as well. I rebarrelled a '94 with a bent barrel. Shoots like a house on fire.
If the cartridge is a different lenght then the original you need to change the two cartridge guides inside the receiver.

TL........the 33 Win is an 86 cartridge and based off a 45-70 case........won't work in a 94........you're going to give us Yukoners a bad name with little faux pas like that............LOL

OP....I'd have a good smith give it a crown job first.....easy and cheap and most likely the problem.

"...is not..." Right. Seems one needs to read the correct dimension. DOH!
"...when Gun Parts Corp would still ship barrels..." They still would but the U.S. government won't let them without paying a huge fee.
