When the 6.5 starts to wonder/ is burnt out, I was wondering what the process would be to switch out the 6.5-284 30" heavy barrel and insert a .308 30" heavy barrel.
Is it easy to do?
What if anything would have to be changed?
Thanks in advance.

For your Savage all you should need is a chambered and threaded barrel, headspace guage, barrel nut wrench and a bench vise.

How many rounds through your 6.5? Have tried adjusting seating depth to follow the erosion of the lands?

My 6.5 is a single shot, so that won't be a problem.
I have 300 rounds through it, and I was just getting prepared for the end of that barrels life. It will probably be done at the end of this 2009 summer.
I would like to switch to a 308, because my other Savage 308 shoots like a dream come true.
So as the erosion progresses I'm suppose to keep extending the bullet seating? Time for me to read up on how far out is max!
Thanks

The swapping of barrels on a Savage is very straightforward. Once you have the gear and a bit of experience, you will be able to change them in 10 mins. Then you may choose to have a selection of barrels in various chamberings.

Do consider rds like the 6BR, and 260R/6.5 Mystic. Ballistics very similar to the 6.5-284 with double the barrel life.

But then, why not have one of each...including a 308, or 280AI or.....

Let me know when you would like a barrel. Lead time is 12 to 16wks.

Right now, your is seater so far away from the lands. Many bullets prefer that relationship so you need to extend the seating depth to keep that constant. You might have to adjust your powder amounts slightly to account for the larger case volume.

My experience is that the depth of the lands will simply erode to the point where you have no rifling to engrave. The wear doesn't just happen at the leade but several inches down the length of barrel. Doesn't matter how far you seat out - like shooting in a shotgun.

so if accuracy starts to fade, a bit of length tuning will help but be prepared that the barrel will simply loose effectiveness quite colourfully in short order.

"...have 300 rounds through it..." You have a long way to go before your barrel is shot out. Think in terms of thousands of rounds.

Just be sure to order the proper shank size for your barrel. I could be wrong but I think that the 12F uses the large shank. I am not familiar with the 12F but I am pretty sure the 12LRPV is a large shank action.....so thats why I am thinking the F uses the large shank as well.

Explained better here....

Anyways just be sure to double check that before buying a barrel.
