I got a old 760 pump in 270win to complete a trade, and I was going to flip it but now I'm thinking it would be cool to rebarrel it to 35rem or maybe a 358win, can this be done with a simple barrel change? it's old, not even drilled and tapped for a scope

I had one done at epps for around $500, including the barrel. Took about 2 months.

If you rebore, you'd likely have to go to a .35 whelen, as a .35 rem or .358 win won't clean up the .270 chamber.

Yup can be done. Same bolt face. Take it to epps they have done them before. Since it is a pump there is no worry about gas system.

I would think most gunsmiths worthy of the designation could rebarrel a 760/7600. Talk to a few of thgem and make a plan. Personally, I would go rebarrel before reboring.

I have a 760 in .30-06 kicking around that I keep thinking would be pretty damn cool to turn into a .338-06. Problem is, other than making me feel cool, I know it won't do anything any different than it does with the barrel it's wearing right now(in regards to killing)...and money is currently tied up with another project...and when that one is done there is another in line first...

It is a matter of fitting the replacement barrel to the original barrel extension. Basically like fitting a barrel to a receiver. It can be done, although I don't know if many gunsmiths have experience doing it.

If you can find another 760 barrel assembly, it will fit your 760 receiver. This is true for most calibres. These barrel assemblies interchange something like the barrel assembly on a 870 shotgun. No big deal once you have done it once or twice. There is lots of advice on this site, how to do it. The real problem is that spare barrels often sell for about the same price as a complete used gun.

Most barrels for sale do not include the lug required for attaching, just the barrel. Selling a barrel with the lug makes no sense, as the receiver is useless without it, and I doubt you can find a spare one in Canada. Unless someone has damaged their receiver beyond repair.

This.

Unless there is some big sentimentality it's not worth it. I looked into rebarrelling mine and it's just too expensive. Mine is a 270 as well.

It has some small pits near the muzzle and I've found it needs about 10 fouling shots before it starts settling down. Something I had to find out through trial and error.
