Hello,
I have a Remington 700 in a standard long action that is going to shoot out here soon. I can't decide on a caliber to rebarrel to. Originally I was think about a 6.5x284 Norma, or a 6.5x47 lapua, ( nobody suggest the 338 edge I want, cuz I want to do that on a McMillan a5 stock not the hs precision that I have now) please suggest anything except the 338 edge and the 7 mm stw.
Thanks,
Ty

Anything you want in a standard bolt face cartridge... if you want a magnum it would probably be cheaper to trade for a magnum action.

Unless you want to be repeating the rebarreling fairly soon, I do not suggest the 6.5-284. If you have a long action, I would suggest 6.5X55

Alternatively, the venerable 260 is also another great choice.

Like Obtunded says, you have a long action. Means you need to opt for a .30-06 like cartridge length. Means the 6.5x47 Lapua are out. Too short for the mag and the action. The 6.5x284 Norma might work, but you'll be spending a pile of money on dies.
"...that is going to shoot out..." What makes you think that? What's it chambered in now? And "the intended purpose of the gun?" matters too.
So does your budget.

260 AI if I had to do my 6.5 over again.

6MM BR is another good choice but a long action is a bit of overkill.

284 Win is another good choice.

The gun is a 280, but it has a standard factory barrel with 1600 hundred rounds through it and accuracy is starting to diminish. I am looking for a high velocity, efficient round. For f class and long range targets out to 1200. My scope has 55 Moa of adjustment to get it out there if your wondering. I like the 6.5x284 because it is more of a long action caliber, but the barrel life sucks, so I like the idea of a 260 ai,284,and the 6.5-06 I was hoping to get the whole thing ( barrel, chambering, finish, dies and supplies) for under 1k

"...with 1600 hundred rounds through it and accuracy is..." Not a chance of a barrel going down hill with that few through it. "I want to change it." is reason enough though.
You might get away under a grand. Depends on the barrel you put on and who changes it. A Shilen heavy match barrel starts at $300Cdn plus installation from Mystic. Contact him.

I have put 1600 rounds through it, im not the first owner, I bought it used 4 years ago and the rifle was barrel and action are dated 1984,

If this Helps....

Lapua Commences Production of .260 Rem Cartridge Brass
Here is great news for high-power shooters, tactical competitors, and hunters. Lapua will be producing .260 Remington brass starting in 2011. The official announcement will be made at SHOT Show 2011 in Las Vegas, and brass should start arriving in early spring. With Lapua’s introduction of .260 Rem brass, precision shooters now have a “no-brainer” first choice for cartridge brass in this popular chambering. No longer will you have to sort and cull (and re-sort) Rem-brand .260 brass. And you won’t have to fool around necking-up .243 brass or necking down .308 brass, with the problems that come with case-reforming operations.

The .260 Rem offers ballistics similar to the 6.5×55 with a cartridge size that fits short actions. For long range, the .260 Rem works great with 120gr to 142gr bullets, making it highly suitable for both hunting and target shooting. Here is what Lapua says about its new brass:
