Rebarreling a savage to 300 WSM, why not?

I've got an extra Savage 10FCP McMillan in 308 win and I'd like something with a little more punch. I was going to build a 300 Win Mag but then thought I'd see about 300wsm in this rifle. I know about the large/small shank issue but why can't a custom barrel be made to work? As it stands my rifle has a 26" barrel so chould't I just get this rechambered or even a drop in PacNor 30" rechambered? Yes, I know about the bolt head change as well. I've read that you can push a 210 VLD from a 300wsm 28" barrel and that is very interesting! But the 190's would be fine too.

Thanks for the help,

Jeff

I know its been done before ...... you should check out http://www.savageshooters.com/SavageForum/

There is a wealth of Savage expertise over there. I believe you can get pre-fit savage barrels in small shank 300 WSM commercially, again check out some of the banner advertisers on Savageshooters.

As you mentioned it'll require a bolt head swap, Sharp Shooter supply would be the place to call for a push feed magnum bolt head for a short action. From what I understand, it is possible to use a long action magnum bolt head - but it has to be machined shorter to get the proper firing pin protrusion on a short action rifle. The "push feed" bolt head would be the simplest conversion, as the "controlled round feed" bolt head requires a fixed blade ejector etc.

I'd also be concerned about feeding ..... the mag box and follower for a 300WSM might be required as well.

Comparing dimensions on the two cartridges, you should be able to run a reamer into your existing .308 barrel and convert it to 300WSM without too much difficulty. ( I'm not a gunsmith, and I may be just some crazy internet nutjob, so consult an expert !! ;) )

Good luck, and post pictures when your done !!

Absolutely a no-brainer!!:)
Rangesports Unlimited did my 950T (savage J action) over with a McPhee 300WSM barrel with no problems.
Shoots tremendous right out to the mile marker!:D

Mag box and follower are the same as the 308.

The bolt head would be changed to the mag bolt head but it is longer than the wsm's CRF bolt head, and longer and has deeper lugs than the 308 head. You would need a extended firing pin stop from SSS to remedy this.
