Has anyone done this before? I hear it is a pain. just wondering if it is worth it or just to sell the rifle and build what I want.(28" heavy barrel in 6.5x55)

From what I heard, the barrel is not screwed on the receiver but ''pressed'' inside. I don't think it can easily be done by any smith.

Cut the barrel tenon off, ream out the receiver, thread and fit new barrel. Easier (and cheaper) to just buy another gun.
