Does anybody have any opinions on rebarreling a restricted M1 to make it a non-restricted? Also, any tips on where to get the barrel and/or have the work done? Any information on the cost associated with it would also be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Carbines are great fun to shoot and the cartridge can be loaded up easily. So yes, if you can do it. Trick will be finding the longer barrel. Nobody, Stateside, is currently making 'em and the Carbine is on the Restricted for Export list. Criterion is thinking of making an 18.75" barrel though. CBI Direct is Criterion. There is a Canadian Criterion dealer. I forget who though.

Don't think any are being made here either. Not exactly sure though.
Anyway, Epp's wants $150 plus the cost of the barrel. It's not a terribly difficult or time consuming job, but the smithy needs the right tools. Some of the short barrels are on there really tight too. Takes a bigger hammer to get 'em off.

I had one done last year by Manteo97 here on CGN. He did a great job. Turn around was around 2-3 weeks. I don't know if he is still doing them, but it might be worth dropping him a line and asking.

Did my own not rocket science. Make sure you have the proper barrel wrench and vise and headspace guage and your off. Lots of info on the net

Paid $99.00 (not a match barrel) for my barrel and about $150.00 to get it installed if I remember right, it was many moons ago though. Your biggest problem may be getting it deregistered to non restricted class.

When I did mine (around 4 or 5 years ago) the RCMP Tech that called me told me it was illegal to change the rifle from restricted to non restricted! He knew because he was also a Firearms Instructor! I had to call back and talk to a Supervisor to get it done, she was very sorry at what the Techy did and said she would look into it to straighten him out.

Good luck finding a barrel, it's alot of fun taking a M1 Carbine into the woods. Nice brush gun for deer around here, with the right ammo of course.

Tight is an understatement! Big hammer and some heat. Crazy tight

Stay away from heat when removing or installing a barrel. If a barrel won't index properly the fix is to remove some metal from the shoulder of the barrel until it times up to the proper starting position before final tightening.

New production Non-Restricted M1 Carbines can be purchased through Auto Ordnance. We have these guns in stock at Epps, priced at $873.75 + taxes. There are presently four (4) such guns available. The current crop of these carbines are very well built, and shoot quite accurately. I have owned two of them myself, and was extremely happy with both examples.

That being said, however, the real problem with trying to reclassify an existing M1 Carbine is, as everyone has pointed out, the task of finding a barrel. We have searched for any wholesalers or distributors that are able to fabricate barrels for these guns and ship them to Canada, but as of this date there seems to be no such avenue available.

For the time being, at least, rebarreling and reclassifying the M1 Carbine remains a cumbersome exercise in futility.

Good luck with your search, and if you do find a source for barrels, please pass it on to the rest of us so we can help others in your situation as well!

It's an action wrench and barrel vise. You need a solid bench and a regular bench vise too. Heat is not needed if the hammer/mallet/4' x 2" Al bar(used that on No. 4's, in the shop, years ago) is big enough.

Well here's a Canadian source. I have a four 19" M1 carbine barrels available, two in stainless. $330 + your old 18" barrel installed on your M1 carbine. Pic shows std length compared to the ones I have.
