I have pondered rebarreling my Nork M14 from time to time and I am looking for guys who have rebarreled their m14/m305's with Match barrels.

The question is....with your new custom barrel were you satisfied with the results, would you do it again or should you have just left the old clunker as is...a decent shooting battle rifle.

Interested in your opinions and the real improvement in group size at any range with your new Match barrel.

I would first ask myself do I need a match barrel. I've installed a great many for myself and others.
For my self, the first one I uilt a few years back was with a krieger 22'medium DMR barrel. My intent was to join guys like Oldsmobiler and others at service rifle events.... Then I just got too busy.
Next one was for hunting, krieger medium 18.5". Extremely accurate as M14's go , confident 1" groups in perfect bench rest conditions.... Just too heavy to hump around.

So for me, and others will have their own thoughts. If I was indeed going compete in service rifle or other distance events.... Absolutely. Match barrel thickness means less group affecting barrel whip and also affords this accuracy longer as the thicker match barrels take more rounds to get accuracy affecting heat build up. Not to mention the precision quality of barrels such as krieger and douglas

Depends on what you want to do with your rifle............if you are only interested in plinking/blasting away then you are further ahead to save your $$$$$$$ and keep the barrel you have.

If you are interested in obtaining the best accuracy you can, or competing in Service rifle/Precision rifle matches, then you should go the "match" barrel route.

Keep in mind match barrels come in Medium and heavy contours, and can be had in different twists/rifling. For the ultimate precision I tend to favour heavy contour barrels with 1 in 10" twist................For service rifle I would go the same twist but in a Medium contour just to shed some weight.

The most accurate M14 type rifle I owned had a Douglas Heavy 1 in 10" twist barrel that loved 175gr. Matchkings.............Also had a SEI Med Contour CrazyHorse barrel that shot pretty damn good.........both were great out to 500 meters.........

The barrel is just the beginning............to really utilize that match barrel will require other "Match Grade" quality components such as new bolt, gas system, etc..........and then tuning and load development...............So in a nut shell it is just not as simple as screwing on a "Match" barrel..............and chasing M14 accuracy can get REALLY expensive..... ;)

There is a "sticky" near the top of the forum that I posted in regards to the build I did with the Crazyhorse barrel...............that will give you a good idea of what it involved...... :)

In all honestly.
No
Took a semi-auto 1.5 to 2.0 MOA rifle and did all the bells and wistle's and only turned it into a 1 MOA rifle.
Now if I took the same amount of money and dumped it into a bolt action I would have a crazy 0.5 MOA or under rifle...
But here is the kicker. The M14 shooting at a metal gong at 750 meter's out shot my friends Sako TRG when 5 rounds were needed to shoot a target in rapid fire (under 10 seconds for 5 shots). I got 4 out of 5 and he got only 3 out 4 shots off.

Exactly.
Every mod that you want to do, ask yourself - will this make my rifle a better battle rifle? Even the most expensive m305 build with all the cool toys and thousands of dollars spent will probably be outshot by your average bolty.

Thanks for the replies so far...

have you done the easy, cheap things? New spring guide? bedded the action? developed a good handload?

These things cost almost nothing and can make a big improvement.

Yes I have done most of the mods, and have attended Hungry's Clinics...I have achieved what I think are very good results with the stock bbl, and was thinking of taking the next step.

With handloads I am getting between 1.5 and 2" groups at 100 yards for five shots, sometimes smaller and I feel this is as good as it's going to get with this barrel.

Was figuring if I could get 1" groups consistently with a new barrel I would be happy....I am not trying to build a rifle to compete with a bolt action, I know that is unrealistic.

I have a trued Rem 700 with Kreiger barrel for that.

I am not going to spend thousands, but for the cost of a barrel....maybe.

For the cost of a new barrel and new bolt....mmmm, not sure, but still maybe.

Thing is I really enjoy shooting the rifle and as the Colonel says ''only accurate rifles are interesting"

You don't need a new bolt. Buy a Krieger pipe they come short chambered. Have the smith install it on your norc and finish ream the chamber to 1.631 and enjoy. You will need a new (GI) gas cyl lock and castle nut.
