I was wondering if anyone has done this, the main concern is the slightly higher pressure (65k vs 64k) and the 0.2" longer OAL of the Weatherby round.

It can be done, at least off the top of my head, I can't think of why it couldn't

As to pressure, there are many rounds much smaller than the 300WBY/WM that generate as much or even more pressure.

I sell Pac-Nor match quality drop-in barrels for Stevens/Savage. 300 WBY is one of the chamber options.

The Savage LA has been used to house monster magnums and now is used to shoot the 338LM.

The 300Wby was a factory offering years back.

Problem isn't the barrel swap, its the mag.

The new gen action mags are too short and getting parts/modifying the action is a royal PITA.

If you really want a WBY, consider a HOWA or Rem magnum LA. Although the barrel install will be more, the hassle of making it feed will be way less. In a hunting rifle, which I assume this will be, function is everything.

Personally, there is precious little real world benefit between these two cases in standard length barrels and the usual hunting weight bullets.

If you really want more case capacity AND still use a standard magnum action, the 300DAKOTA will do the same as the Wby and should fit quite nicely into the standard magnum box.

Let me know if I can help you with barrels - Shilen and McGowen.

Very useful information

Thank you Jerry, it's for my dad. We've been reading your articles which got him looking down this road. I'm not really sure why he wants that caliber, he already has Forster dies for it but we have 300 WSM as well which I understand could work in the long action with mag bolt face. Thanks again for the info, I'll pass it along.

Just a little point of interest for you, but since you posted in the precision rifle section I though I would mention my long range accuracy findings on the two rounds.

Using 200 grain bullets the 300Win delivers best long range accuracy at a bit over 2900fps.
With the same bullets got best accuracy with the 300Wby at around 2850-2900fps.
The most accurate powder (in my guns) RL-22 shot best at 2800fps.

I believe this is partly why the 308 Baer (a conventional shoulder 300Wby) was invented.

IMHO the 300Win is the best conventional 30 cal mag.

300 WSM Feeding

I own 3 300 WSMs and they feed fine from a centre line mag. This is the key to short "fat" cartridges. Even a 6 BR feeds better. Don't know the reason but it works. One used a HS Precision 308 DBM, another in a BDL with Wyatt Outdoors new internal mag and one on a LA using a Kwik clip DBM. OA length is the biggest issue. Using centre line feed is a direct route to the chamber. Don.

Aren't there major feeding issues with the WSMs? I thought it had to do with the case body diameter being larger than the base.

There can be in staggered mags but usually not with center feed mags.

That is why the Savage system seems to have alot of happy people.

Some Win and Browning and Rems rifles have had issues.

Definitely not a good idea in a controlled feed staggered mag action.
