Rebarrelling and rechambering a damaged svt 40

Why not zoidberg? Uhhhh.... I mean why not 6.5x54r? You'd get the long range, the heavy punch, and not have to mess around with the boltface.

Now that's a thought :D I mean, it's about the furthest from a commercially available cartridge as I can get... but it's intriguing in other ways :p

If the mag will accept it have you though of doing it up in 45-70? I have always liked the idea of a semi auto 45-70. The action is certainly strong enough to handle even the hot loads.

I vote for 9.3x53R rebore. Because, who else will have one? A semi-automatic big-bore rifle with a muzzle brake will create one badass bush gun. You can take down a moose and a charging bear all at the same time with lightning speed.

I'd glossed past the 9.3x53R initially... but now I'm intrigued. I'm also intrigued by the concept of a 45x54r like here ( http://forums.nitroexpress.com/printthread.php?Board=classicarchive&main=200245&type=post )

God knows with that increase in bullet diameter feeding might become an issue, but hey, don't know until you try it right?

Then again, my intent was a ballistically superior flatter shooting gun, so this would completely derail that plan :p

Today I took out my SVT-40 and put some 8x56r in the magazine. They fit into the magazine without issue. I also put a round on the bolt face and it properly gripped and ejected the round. If you wanted to do any real shooting with it you would have to reload but most stores usually have some soft point ammo available. Realistically you could convert the SVT-40 to this caliber with just changing the barrel out and maybe some tinkering with the magazine to ensure proper feeding.
Just some food for thought.

It's possible but wouldn't be worth the effort - it's an oddball bore diameter and a cartridge that doesn't add anything over the 7.62x54r - 308 is beneficial because it's more common, 6.5x55 is ballistically superior and still common, 6.5x54r vostok is the easiest ballistically superior cartridge but is the least available.
