I realize it's hard to give a ballpark estimate, but......
I'm considering having a Rem 700 rebarrelled. Stainless, 24", standard chambering. (.257 Roberts). Assuming I supply the donor rifle, what kind of dollars can I reasonably expect to pay for a rebarrel and chambering? I don't plan on any other work being done except to bed the action and free-float the barrel, which I expect to be the same contour as the original.
Any barrel manufacturers to recommend? Speed isn't an issue; this project will probably be for next year, if I ever get at it at all. Just curious right now. thanks.

a guy here got someone to do it for like 60 or $70 but it was a factory barrel from another project the smith did

Thanks guys,
I was figuring somewhere in the $500 ballpark. Sure wish someone would just offer a stainless factory .257. I tried to get Ellwood Epps to get me one of the special run of the 700 Walnut/Stainless produced in about 2000 (I think 20,000 were made?) but it wasn't worth their time. I should just ask SuperCub to give me his Lam/SS Mountain Rifle. I hear he's a generous guy.

Barrel $375
chambering, threading and machining muzzle $150 - $200
stock work $100

That's only if the blank is pre-countoured. If not, add $200. Fluting $300, Finishing (bluing or otherwise) - $100. Work to feed system (not always necessary, depends on the caliber change) - $50-300

rebarreling a 700 to 257 Bob should be a fairly straight forward job, I wouldnt forsee any chambering problems with such a long tapered case with a push feed action

My 257 is blued 700 LA action with a 22'' stainless MR contour King bbl. I HAD a walnut MR stock on it but swapped the stock for a Remington TI. It lost about 3/4lb with the TI stock. It now weighs 7lb with 2x7 VXII.

I personally wouldn't do a 257 in standard contour as it ends up being pretty heavy, esp with a walnut stock. Might as well get a 25/06.

I believe Ruger is offering a SS 257 this year. - dan

Thanks Dan. I didn't see it on their site, but I'll look again.
I'm not looking for a lightweight rifle, 7 to 7.5 unscoped is fine; I carry my rifles short distances, generally. Not more than a couple of miles, and the areas I hunt aren't mountainous.
SuperCub, thanks for clarifying. Does this mean you're NOT gonna give me the rifle? Where's the love?
