Please be gentle on me if this is a dumb question for one with more experience than I but.....

If I take say a remington long action, action can I twist any calibre long action barrel (obviously a barrel that fits a Remington) on to it?

For example - can I take a Remington model 700 action from a .270 and twist a .280 barrel on to it? or does the action require modification also.

Thanks

No modification is needed, just have to get the headspace correct for that particular barrel. The 270 and 280 are very similar rounds along with the 30-06 and several others that are based on the same case.

Thanks - so the Smith checks for the headspace when they replace the barrel do they? Also, any ballpark idea about what it would cost for a smith to take one off and replace it say if I have the new barrel?

Thanks

The headspace may be close but the printing / sights do not line up properly. If you want the printing/sights indexed correctly, then the barrel will require machining and chambering. It would not be uncommon to be charged $50 to $150 is my guess. With most it just depends on how long it takes to do it.
