Ok so my buddy put the wrong ammo in his 30-06 semi. Ovb it didn't fire or even load properly, but it got stuck. We beat the crap out of his rifle getting it out. (impatient and wanted it out, didn't want to tear the whole thing down) We beat up the ejection port and got a lot of scratches on it. So I told him I would fix it up for him because I like projects to do in my free time. I had filed down the ejection port, cleaned it up made it all smooth and clean looking again, sanded a lot of the scratch marks down and have done 4 layers of bluing. I used the "Outers gun blue" I noticed its more metallic blue then a darker black (what im looking for). You cant notice it unless you really look at it, but im a perfectionist. Is there a gun blue that is a black color or darker ? I can put up pictures if that helps, really all im looking for is a darker bluing agent. Also could I just put it over the current or would I have to sand it all down again ?

Although awesome for touch ups, matching cold blue with a previous hot blue is an easy way to get grey hair!. If your friend loved his rifle, he wouldn't have marred it. You love it which is cool, but are you willing to strip old blue, polish, and refinish? That seems to be the best way to get 'em all matching.

Like camster said its almost impossible to match cold blue to hot bluing. They just aren't the same quality wise. When hot blueing if you want a really deep shiny blueing job the metal is polished not sanded.

I have heated metal with a propane torch and dipped it in 50 weight oil to cool. You just make it hot. I did an old shotgun this way and it turned out.

thanks for the info guys ! Ive done all that I can (am willing to do without him buying the things needed) with this rifle, he will be pleased. Just makes me twitch a little when I know I could make it better.
