My father passed during our moose hunt last year . Ive acquired his old rifle, a 1964 model 100 in .243
I’m not a fan of .243 , mostly because I have a very accurate 22-250 for coyotes, and my grandfathers old tikka .270 for deer medicine.

So to make the model 100 fit into my Arsenal a bit better (I don’t want to sell it, and I want to get some use from it), I was thinking of re boreing it to .358win which would make it a great semi-auto moose rifle for 0-300 yards.

Has anyone done a Rebore? Or should I be looking at re-barreling?

Could anyone recommend a good gunsmith in Canada I could send it too?

Deal with the .243 caliber and work up a good deer load?

I’m lacking something on the larger end (30-06 is my largest caliber) and I had a craving for a 35 whelen, but the 358 would also be excellent.

If I can’t get it to 358 win I’ll go with the 338fed, I’d like to stay away from the tough 338 bullets though. Something about a 35 cal is calling me.

Ron Smith ( RKS) could do it, IF there is enough barrel diameter to allow the extra size in caliber.
He is out here in Alberta .

A friend also recommended him. I’ll most likely be sending the rifle there. Google seems to tell me the .358 is possible with the sporter barrel.

There are plenty of softer 338 bullets. Speer offers plenty and the nosler partition and accubond are excellent bullets as in the hornady sst at 338fed velocities.

Doubt you'll find a replacement, however, the trigger on these is very dirt sensitive. Clean and lube can make a huge difference.
Not sure why Winchester didn't offer the .358 in the 100, when they did in the 88, but if possible that's what I'd go for.

I was thinking about reboring a model 88 in .308 to .338 so I contacted Jury Custom Barrels . Evidently the minimum barrel contour required is a #3 . Unfortunately, the Win 88 (and I presume the 100s) is a #0 or #1 . Sigh.

I’ve heard of a few being done . Someone else mentioned 88man had a model 88 done to .338 or .358 I forget.

I’m going to contact Ron smith after the holidays.

Had a few minutes and just gave him a call. He said it’s possible to go to .358 he said he’s done one. He recommended I go with .260 Remington instead of .358win though.

Ron Smith a few years ago rebored a Winchester 88 from 308 to 358 for me.
I also had a 338 fed built off a 88 action.

How’s the accuracy of the rebore to 358? And was the 338 Fed rebuild with a new barrel? Tell me (us) more about that job.
Thanks.

The rebore was good.. I got about 1.5 moa which for 88 imo is good.. Ron Smith did the rebore about 10ish years ago. Very fast turn around and I think was just over 200$ at the time.

The 338 fed is custom 18.5” bull barrel (did not ask for a bull barrel at all) the stock was hogged out to accommodate the barrel and rifle sights were added.. trigger work done as well. It’s a very heavy rifle. I shoot factory federal 210 nosler partitions. It shoots them with tight groups no problem.

No feeding issues at all with either rifle. Both good calibre's imo but I prefer the 338fed.

I really like the 338 fed, it’s a little thumper. I’ve taken 3 deer with it so far.
I have a Rem 700 22-250 I’m considering rebarreling to 338fed.
