Remington 7600 in 35 Whelan
Remington once made the 7600 in 35 Whelan calibre, but maybe only in a rifle. You might find it is lot cheaper to advertise a WTB in the EE here for a 35 Whelan barrel. It could then be cut down and a new front sight put on it.
However, you might consider leaving it full length. There is quite a bit more recoil than the 30-06 because of the heavier bullets used. Also, ammo is more expensive. If you go this route, you would also have the 30-06 barrel available as a spare.
Changing barrels is not really a problem in the 7600. It has a large sleeve and barrel attachment that is held on by a stud and a nut. Headspace might be a problem, but I am inclined to say it will not be, as the bolt of the 7600 locks into the barrel sleeve extension.
