Reboring a Garand to 9.3X62.

You, sir, have my attention.

What an utterly sick, twisted, probably dangerous, insane plan...what magnificent bastard imagined that?

I have a Garand, and I have a 9.3x62mm (T3 Hunter). Exceptional calibre, solid action design, now who has experience with them both in the same package?

This is one of those times when I wish I had bought a case of those $225 Garands that SIR was flogging in the late 90's. I can't imagine what I would do with a Garand in 366 Wagner but I'm suddenly struck by the desire to have one.

I turned one down chambered in 35 whelen a couple of years ago, to many sticks in the fire at the time but have often kicked myself for my bad judgment

You wouldn't be able to take it to most African countries as it's a semi -auto . I remember a guy that redid a BAR into a .458 win mag..........Harold

I wasn't thinking of Africa. I was remembering taking my T3 Hunter into the AB side of the Rockies, into the foothills. That calibre in that rifle with Leupold for glass was an amazing combo.
Only, where I hunt back home in ON I won't see elk or mulies, & most swamps or rivers here are too thick for open-country optics. Garand-type iron-sights are well-suited, considering the longest shot I've had at a moose was maybe 120-130m ?
If anything the only criticism of the 9.3mm Garand idea for here would be length/weight in thick brush, or getting in & out of a canoe.
Hey, if we're dreaming here; let's dream big, & in colour: shorter 'Tanker'-style Garand carbine, in 9.3x57mm !! More than enough for N/ON swamp-donkeys...

I like the way your thinking

Could this be done to a 30-06 BAR ?

pounder

When i inquired with the company that does the 338 Bar to 416 Taylor conversion, the issue with the Bar is caming force for cycling. The conversion included custom SB sizing dies. I am not sure if the bolt face is the same or if the magazine from the 06 would work with the x62?

The Garand is a military and much more robust action than the Bar. I would think that the conversion to x62 would have less problems with that action, than with a Bar. I know when i got info back, the cost of conversion for the Bar from 338 to 416 was about $2300, or they had some sitting in the rack for $1800. So that is USD, irunguns to bring it in for $250, conversion, taxes, any duty. I would think that you are approaching $4K to your door. So at that point you are close to the ATRS Modern magnum that they are proposing after the M Varmiter. I believe for that run if they are to do it, they are considering 300WM and 338LM.

Anything is possible if one throws enough money at the problem. While we are Gunnutz, some of these thoughts are pretty nutty.

Years ago, I saw a Garand rebored to 35 Whelen at Paul Rogan's shop here in Whitehorse. It worked!

No reason the '62 would not work, especially since it operates at chamber pressure similar to the 30-06. The gas port would have to be tuned, but that is a relatively simple undertaking.

Sure, it's technically possible and the gas system would function with an adjustable gas plug, but why? The Garand is a relatively heavy rifle and I've never seen a real need for a semi-auto hunting rifle anyway. Be a real Canadian an use a No4 Lee Enfield:p. It already comes with a nice aperture sight and there are some nice 180gr hunting bullets which work well on Moose or Elk.

Real Men Don't Eat Quiche! ;)

I own no semi-auto firearms of any kind. I hunt with bolt action rifles.

Have one lovely Lee Enfield stalking rifle in 303 Br, and a very fine Husqvarna 9.3X62 blued steel and walnut sporter.

Both are fitted with a nice aperture sight, and nothing else.

I can see no reason why the operating system of the Garand would need any modifications to function with the 366 Wagner. The pressure curves for the two cartridges in question are very similar and one could load the 9.3 to make it work correctly. Factory ammo may be a small problem (but I doubt it) and most 9.3 shooters handload anyway. The function of the gas system on the Garand is not the least picky and the two I had would work with 150, 180 and 200 gn bullets all using different powders and pressure curves. I don't recall them ever failing to feed or function. I did not do a lot of work with them but I remember that I was impressed with their lack of being fussy (for want of a better phrase).

This could probably morph into a bear defence thread if we aren't careful here...........really what could be better than 8 X 270-320 grn 9.3mm bullets for self preservation............but let's not go down that road...........
