Well gentlemen, it seems to me that Canada may be in the midst of a new era. Harper is in, and in to stay. The Liberal machine is in ruins. In consequence, the economy of Canada is roaring, the dollar is at an unprecedented high, and everyone looks forward to a time of economic growth and human progress.

Who knows? We may even be able to retain ownership of our guns for an indefinite period of time. When Harper wins his majority, we may see the end of the useless registration program, and the relentless campaign of the gun grabbers may be dealt a setback from which it might never recover.

In keeping with the current state of the nation, I give you the rebirth of a Canadian classic. Perhaps it is not a military surplus item, per say, but I think the audience in this forum will greatly appreciate it. It is the old 280 Ross, rebuilt and reborn.

I bought it off Tiriaq some years ago and display it here for the first time. It handless like a dream, and the sites are simply outstanding, and ultra cool to boot. Who knows? The day may come when Canada rediscovers the merits of this fine old rifle and cartridge, and puts it back into production. The Jerries are making their old assault rifles again, and I see no reason why we cannot do something similar. The day may come. But if it never does, please enjoy these pictures.

Sir,you are indeed an optomist.Just what have Harper and Co done to safeguard our interests? To this point all I can see is them deferring the long gun registration process.Lots of talk, but no real action. Now we are about to see implementation of the UN gun marking convention which was agreed to by the Libs.No action to stop this by Harper,Day and crowd.

Harper is cozying up to Quebec bigtime so that he can garner more votes there and form a majority next election. Gun control is well supported in Quebec, and in the vote rich urban areas in the rest of the country, and Harper will play to this and any other issue that resonates with the Quebec voter. He will cut us adrift in a heartbeat if he sees a bigger payoff in this area.

Many of us abandoned the "old" Conservative party for Reform and then Alliance after the Mulroney/Campbell anti-gun agenda.Unfortunately it seems Harper is morphing to become more and more like them.BTW nice old Ross.

Looks great! Nice wood! Did you restore the stock, make a new one, or ? Ditto for the blue, it looks minty. Redone, I assume? So how's it shoot?

Means anything coming into the country gets pretty etched "made in (country of origin) date of production etc into them where it is the ugliest. Just the UN doing it's best to ensure all our enfields, k98 all matching WW2 bringbacks and ruger 10/22's don't go to help an evil african dictator terrorize his people and run a guerilla war, because, as we all know, africans are terrified of UN gun markings...

Nice ross too. I love em - Canadian made and different than the rest.

Very nice rifle, BigBill!
I'm not green with envy but happy to see you restored the Ross in its .280 guise, a performer by any modern standards and the equivalent of the actual 7mm Remington Magnum. Ah! If they only made some brass available...
Where did you find that stock?
PP.

I bought the gun from a CGN guy. It was rebuilt by a gunsmith. I do not know where he got the stock. I think what he did was he obtained a beat up 280 Ross, and rebuilt it. The stock seems to be refinished. It has a new barrel.

Brass is available, but costs a fortune. I am told that 300H&H can be fire formed to 280 Ross. The barrel is actually 284, so it will take standard 7MM bullets.

I have around 40 rounds of HDS 280 Ross brass. I have not shot it yet.

That 280 was supposed to have been one heck of a performer.
Have you shot it?
Cheers

Have to admit I am half scared to fire it. The cases are enormous, and I imagine it is a real powerhouse. All those stories about unlocked discharges are in the back of my mind. I can picture the bolt coming back and blowing my fu**ing head off.

But one day I will fire it.

The case is big, but ballistically it's like shooting a 7mm Rem Mag. Bungee cord it to a rifle rest and pull the trigger with a piece of string if you're leary of the bolt. You can see the lugs go into place correctly when you close it though, so if you are set up right, there shouldn't be an issue. Beautiful rifle though, and one I've always desired. Cudos to you. - dan
