Hi,

Want to say thank you for shipping my 1911a1 so fast. Very surprised when I saw the Canpar truck stopping in front of my door.

And, I have a quick question. The pistol was heavy greased. What do you suggest to clean it? Do I need to strip it totally? Should I use some kind of solvent? Somebody suggests wd-40. Is that safe to the gun blue?

I stripped it down (YouTube) and gave it some good blasts and wipe down with brake cleaner. Worked like a charm. Then oiled it up nicely and went to the range. Happy shooting. They are fun to shoot.

I would use that G96 Gun cleaner/lubricant. It works fantastic and I have had it recommended to me on several occasions.

I stripped the gun and used a can of carb cleaner to blast the whole gun down. Worked like a charm, oiled the slide/barrel and shoot a hundred rounds. Then cleaned again with g96

full strip down, lay each part out and clean off the grease with some sort of light solvent, then inspect and reassemble with the correct lubrication in the right places.

There are online guides to break down, cleaning, lubing and reassembly.

also, watch it with strong solvents like carb sprays. While these can definitely clean persistant carbon/grease etc, they can and will strip paint and other finishes if you are not careful.

I stripped mine down and used the Ed's Red homebrew solution. I have used it on all my other firearms and love it. Keep in mind it shouldn't be used indoors though (I did mine in the garage in my Ultrasonic cleaner).

I skipped the lanoline ingredient.

as for lighter solvents, I just mean anything that is not as harsh as carb spray or the like. Brake cleaner works well and flash dries really quickly. There are those other spray cleaners targeted at firearms owners that will work just fine. And like stated above, the homemade solvent and boiling will work well too.

I am an auto technician(liscenced mechanic) and I have seen carb spray damage good hard paint or other coatings.

Thanks folks. I got some methanol to clean the gun, it worked pretty good. Strip down, clean, re-oil. The gun looks nice now.
