Hey guys-hoping the right eyes fall on this post...

I recently acquired an old Wingmaster that had the top of it's receiver drilled/tapped for a scope rail. Whoever did it-I applaud how cleanly it was done, but I want this old girl as close to original as possible. I removed the rail, and there are 4 holes to be addressed. I keep a wide variety of sample machine screws (metric and imperial) for challenges like this-determining the thread pitch. Near as I can tell, they're 6-40 screws. The 6 looks correct, but my sample screw is a 6-32 and the threads are not fine enough. If memory serves, there is also a 6-48....but until I confirm (this week) I'm going with 6-40.

Brownell's list both 6-40 and 6-48, I'm wondering if anyone knows of a source for these here in Canada? I believe my LGS deals with Brownell's and I can put an order in (they used to, anyway) but my preference would be to support a Canadian retailer, ideally, a CGN sponsor.

Filler screws bring nobody any joy, even when installed...it's more like an itch scratched. lol However, it's today's challenge, hoping someone here can advise.

Thanks!

6-48 is far more standard in guns. Any gun store that mounts scopes will have some. Or you can order them from WGP, brownells or likely on the ee. There are positive stop versions, and standard versions and I’ve seen blued, stainless and brass versions.

If for some reason they are indeed 6-40, any place like Gregg distributors, bumper to bumper, fastenal or a variety of other nut and bolt stores (even our home hardware and Cambodian tire) will have hex drive grub screws. But like I said, 6-48 is far more common in the gun world.

My bet is on 6x48 as well... I have never tapped for 6x40 on any shotgun I have done.

Stop at your local gun shop and ask for 4 6x48 plug screws... new rifles come with 6x48 plug screws installed and they are removed when a scope is mounted... and the shop normally throws them in a box... over the years you end up with a lot of them...

Thanks guys! The local Brafasco guy seemed puzzled at the 6-40 mention, I don't imagine that 6-48 will go any better.

Not sure if my LGS installs scopes, I'd be surprised if they do. I'll update this thread whether I have success finding, or don't.

Thanks

Let me know if you need 4 x of them. I got a bunch here rolling around the spare parts bin. Cost ya nothing. Just pay it forward.
PM me if you need them 4 filler screws.

All the Best!!
Cheers, Barney

6 X 48 has always been the standard in this area & not available @ a hardware store. Brownells Is the best source.

As mentioned - 6-48 is pretty standard scope base screw - what comes with most Weaver and Leupold scope bases, if not the larger 8-40 as used on some Remington rifles. I do run into 6-40 screws on the Ruger scope rings - no doubt used other places, but do not recall seeing that size in scope mount bases.
