I recently inherited a Lee-Enfield #4. The rifle is in excellent condition. There was a tiny amount of surface rust on the top of the left side of the butt socket. I decided to gently sand the area to remove the rust; now I would like to restore the finish. It looks like black paint to me???? Is this possible??? What should I do to maintain the integrity of the rifle in its original military condition.

Thanks to all those who answered.

If the original finish looks like black paint, it is Suncorite, a coating which you cannot get.
You can try to match the appearance with a black paint with similar gloss.
Generally speaking, using sandpaper doesn't really contribute to keeping the integrity of a rifle in original military condition.

Is it just light surface rust ? I had some on my SMLE that came off easily with 0000 steel wool, didn't even hurt the bluing and it looks alot better now.

Sandpaper, removing value with every stroke, since the 1800's...:(

...touch it up with Tremclad gloss black.

Very fine steel wool or cheap, corse, cotton cloth (eg jeans)and WD40 works for me BUT i have never worked on painted steel so try it in small area first.

Find some sort of anti-oxidant solution that will eat rust. The pits will never go away, but the surface will stay intact. Then black BBQ enamal baked in the oven (and the residential sergeant major away with her friends....) will do the trick.
