Here's the scoop, I have finally found a receiver sight for my Winchester 69A, but I don't have an aperture for it.
I haven't shot too much with open sights, so this is going to be fun.
My question is, what size of aperture do you prefer to use for Target & Hunting?

I was out with the rifle today, using it with no aperture just the housing on the sight, I was hitting bricks out at 200 yards, but not every time. I'm sure with an aperture I would have hit more bricks today. Still had fun though.
 
Large aperture for hunting, a small one for target shooting. With no aperture, you have no rear sight. What make is the sight?
 
It's a Lyman 57EF.

I gathered that, larger for hunting and smaller for target, but there are many different choices of actual aperture size ie; 0.040, 0.050, 0.080, 0.093, so what sizes do you prefer?
 
It is a personal thing. With my eyes I need smaller apertures. If you want to spend the money, get a Merit adjustable iris. (Brownells). Then you can have whatever size you want whenever you want.
 
Depends on the lighting conditions, target size, and sight setup of the gun.
You usually use the smallest aperture that gives good contrast of the target. As the aperture gets too small, the target will appear grey without sharp edges.
Also, I've found on some guns, too large an aperture gives me too large a view of the front sight that is distracting. A ring of light around the front sight aperture is just right and a ring of white around the target is necessary as well
 
Apertures

For target use, with a clear target at a known range, you want the smallest one that gives the best front sight/target picture.
For field use, a large one or none at all is best since you can find your target more quickly. Keep in mind that your eye automatically centres itself in the rear hole so hole size is not so important. Just ignore the rear sight and look through it.
Your success at 200 yards shows how well this rear sight works.

I found a three stage aperture on eBay, the main aperture is 7/8" in diameter and has an opening of 0.135" and comes with two inserts one at (target 0.050) and another at 0.080. I think I'll try out this set up and see how I will like it, can't beat the price for a trial of it.

the housing on the receiver sight must have an opening of about 0.230"+ and that does work, but with a smaller hole for sight I should be able to tighten up the flight path of the bullet, and gain better consistant accuracy.

I have to disagree with you and agree with you at the same time on that statement.
