Hey guys,

A poster put up a question about shooting wild dogs on a farm.

Unfortunately - a bunch of people who sure the hell should have known better decided to give him illegal advice. Which is pretty mind meltingly stupid at the best of times on a PUBLIC forum known to be watched by various groups. But is also against our rules.

So I had to trash it. Sorry.

I would encourage the poster to repost the question, and I would STRONGLY encourage other members to keep our rules in mind while posting.

Those rules don't just protect you, they protect the owner of this board who has provided this site to you free of charge. You're a poor guest if you put him at risk by breaking the rules.

i didnt respond i nthe other thread because of obvious reasons posted above BUT will do so here.
if the "wild dogs " are assaulting your sheep, call your local CO's and ask for there advice and what you are lawfully allowed to do . remember when getting advice from ANY government orginization get it in writing and get a contact name and business card with contact info on it. Alot of guys on here can and likely will offer some good advice but many might offer not so good advice on what to do. but the only advice that you SHOULD and want to take is that which will hold up in court , get the picture ;)

I don't recall seeing it, but the bottom line is- Consul tthe LIVESTOCK ACT in your province, and base your decsions on that.

You *can* protect your livestock.

Most jusisdictions, as I understand it, pretty much anything desroying livestock can be shot. But there's the crux! How does the law define what the animal you want to destroy is allowed to do?
In some areas, you will require proof that the animal was destroying livestock. In others, your word will do.
Check it out.
My brother in law (in BC) got himself into a court hearing a few years back for shooting a cougar on his property stalking his sheep. If I remember right, he was fined.

I was the original poster for that thread. Fortunately the dogs never did come back. I did call the MNR but their biggest concern is that they were someone's pet. I don't believe they were because they did kill and partially eat a sheep. I doubt a family pet would be hungry enough to chase down a sheep, kill it and eat it. Also these dogs were extremely skidish as the closest anybody came to them was about 100 yards before they took off. Some other posters were also concerned about the family pet idea, but our concern wasn't a dog trotting across the property. These dogs (3 of them) had a serious interest in my buddy's sheep. I've also heard from a couple different sources that the area had a serious feral dog problem in the 70's and 80's. Anyway, as I said these dogs never did come back and no further action was required. Thanks for all your help boys.

Family pets can and do kill sheep, just because old Rover is a gentle domestic at home has nothing to do with his behaviour when running loose.
Killing and eating sheep is rare for dogs... they usually harass and molest the sheep and many die later from their injuries. Single dogs will attack as often as doubles or larger groups, there is no way to predict this behaviour in your family pet either.
Bottom line is if you let your dog run loose you create a situation that is dangerous for your pet and the local livestock!
