I own a 20 gauge Ithaca/SKB O/U Model 500. It's a nice shotgun. But I am not very familiar with O/Us and to myself the firing sequence seems out of whack.

Let me explain, I've looked at the barrel shank and I'm sure the lower barrel is IC and the upper is Modified choke.

My single trigger is non-selective I think. I believe when I pull the single trigger to fire both barrels, the lower barrel in IC should shoot first. And in thoery
when I pull he trigger the second time, the upper modified barrel should shoot for the second pull of the trigger.

How come this evening when I shot a rabbit and reloaded the expended shell, the upper modified choke barrel shot first?

Also, lately when I use snap-caps to ease firing pin tension, I hear only one snap of the firing pin? Subsequent trigger pulls yield no second snap of the trigger??

I cleaned this shotgun after dis-asseembly and tested fired it with the snap-caps........everything worked as it should?!?!?!?

Confused here................

My Ithaca / SKB 500 20 ga. has a barrel selector built into the base of the trigger. when pushed to the right, it fires the under barrel first and to the left, the over barrel. Is there a chance that you have assumed that the selector is the safety? I do not believe that they built any without the selector. Safety is on top of the tang, under the thumb.

Damn, I am one ignorant gun owner! Thanks for the lesson Longwalker.
This gun was a purchase 3-4 years ago. It's only this fall that I've begun to use it on a regular basis.

Cheers............

also, when you are using the snap caps to release the pins, there is no recoil, so the gun doesnt reset to fire the next barrel.

Do this....load the snap caps....pull trigger "click"....bang the butt of the gun on ur hand, or leg, or a couch or something that wont hurt it so it gets a "jolt". then pull trigger - should hear a 2nd click.

Or use ur barrel selector. Pull trigger - click.....move barrel selector....pull trigger- 2nd click.
