Recent range fun

Hit the range up yesterday morning before work. Figured why not post up some pics. I figure I'm pretty lucky with my close proximity (like 10 min drive) to a sweet, quiet range that goes out to 475yds. Recently dropped my rifle into one of M14Doc's stocks and goddamn is she shooting well with reloads! Here's the pics (the 1st is actually from a few days ago, my new sling hadn't arrived yet and it was sunny out, ha)

The last pic, 3 round group shot at 475yds (I was rechecking my comeups as my ARMS mount came loose the other day). I know a 3 round group doesn't count for much but 2.617" works out to 0.526 MOA which seems ridiculous. Now that I reconfirmed all my comeups I'll have to shoot some 5 and 10 round groups at distance to see how tight she really is!

Sweet. Wish I had access to ranges that long. Club only has 100m and same for the spot I go to on crown land. Even at the farm the longest I might be able to go is 250/300m, if the horses aren't in the fields. Rigs looking good too!

Haven't had a chance to shoot for groups yet as I've been working late and my few ventures to the range have been quickies chasing daylight, shooting at steel. She's running great though and I'll post up some pics when I next shoot for groups! Thanks again Barney!

Hey, how's that rifle shooting now that we glass bedded that baby a couple of weeks ago? :)

Cheers,
Barney

Here's a 5 round group I shot at 200yds today. Prone with a bipod. Didn't have my cheek weld quite right for the first 2 and they ended up a lil high and to the right but settled in nice for the last 3. Nothing crazy but a solid 1.44 MOA. Spent the rest of the day banging gongs out at 400 and 475 so no other groups but I'm confident I can do better. 168gr HRN HPBT over 42.3 gr of Benchmark in Federal cases.

Where in the lower half of Alberta can a guy find a good range over the standard 100 meter range to shoot at? Need a spot to shoot my m14 at too :D

That rifle is shooting great, and very nice shooting on your part as well. I like that range for sure, looks to be such a relaxing place to stretch out an M-14 over irons.

Thanks for the kind words. It is a really relaxing place. I've explained it to friends of mine who don't shoot as where I get my redneck "zen" on. Seems fitting in a place with tons of hippy/yoga types, haha.

Had another nice session up at the range yesterday. It's been quite foggy and as has been the case the past few visits, I couldn't see past the 200 yard line when I pulled in. Luckily it cleared up and I was able to bang the gongs out at 400 and 475yds. Unless it's pouring rain out I've been in the habit of shooting a group at 200 yds just to work on my consistency both in my shooting and in my reloads. Pretty damn happy with my/my rifle's shooting yesterday!

0.826 MOA :)

If you turn the volume up you can hear the gongs. I was alternating between the 475 and 400 yard gongs, using my mildot to hold under for 400.

I can't seem to figure out how to embed the video?

Which scope and mount are you using?

The range looks beautiful!

Thanks! The range really is a beautiful spot, I'm pretty lucky to have it so close to home. I'm using a Leopold Mark IV 3.5-10x40 M1 in medium ARMS 22 rings on an ARMS 18 mount. Super solid mount and no loss of zero when removing the scope and rings if need be.

A beautiful, clear and cold day out here (-4C but felt colder) so figured why not head back up to the range? Figured I'd try cold bore and see what my POI was at our max distance 434m (475yds). 3" right, 1" up. Not bad! Ran a 5 shot string through my chrony and realized that my MV was only 4fps slower on average than when I measured this summer at 25C. I guess Benchmark is as temperature insensitive as Hodgdon claims? Anyone else have any experiences like that?

Shot my usual group at 200yds and wow, this rifle is a lazer beam (for a M14) 0.725 MOA! Quite stoked about that. Here's some pics:

Had a stressful 3 days shooting with a photographer (as in he shot photos of me, haha) for the 2016 Deep Winter Photo Challenge (look it up if you're curious:www.deepwinterphoto.com )so yesterday figured I'd head to the range to decompress. As I only had a real short window there yesterday, I went back today. -4*C and nice and clear.

6.5" which by my calculations works out to 1.307 MOA. Not half bad, I figure :) If you're wondering about the 6 round group, well, I had happened to have loaded 2 mags with 3 rounds...

Didn't really have much time to shoot in the past few months, lotsa ski-related travelling. Made it up to the range the past 2 days though (worked out a new load in my AR yesterday) to try and get my head screwed back on straight. Was pretty damn hot for early May, Kestrel said 33.5C in the sun. Clearly I'm in need of some practice but this group at 425m isn't terrible, I guess. 8.125" for 1.63MOA. It was actually kinda windy today which is abnormal and I've been trying to learn to read the wind. I think I overcompensated but it was quite gusty. Was kinda more stoked on the cold bore shot that was in the 8 ring. Also spent a lot of time shooting sitting as well as kneeling against a barricade as it's been a goal of mine to do more shooting off my belly. Was quite happy to pretty much be at 50% hitting the gong at 425m both sitting and against the barricade. Plenty of room for improvement but that's the whole point, right? Haha
