Is it feasible to rechamber a .222 Rem to .223? Would this be possible by simply reaming out the .222 chamber?

I'm thinking more from the perspective of brass availability of the .223.

Expected bullet weights would be 55 grains, max.

Worthwhile only if your barrel has lots of life left in it.

It will work, but the 223 Rem reamer might not quite clean up the area where the shoulder on the 222 Rem once was so you might have a small "ridge" formed on your fired brass. Cosmetic only. Measure the shoulder diameter of unfired 222 Rem brass and compare to the place the same distance from the base on unfired 223 Rem brass and you will see what I mean - it's about 0.001" larger than 223 Rem brass at that spot.

Sorry if I hi-jack your threead but was wonderin' if the magazines will hold 223 shells as well. I'm thinking of re-chambering a savage 340 in 222 to 223. Any thoughts?

I had a Rem 700 that was rechambered, one of the most accurate rifles I ever owned.I used to leave a little shiny ring around the brass where the 222 shoulder used to be.Never bothered anything,no brass problems or extraction problems.

A positive step up I believe, the 222 is a great cartridge , don't get me wrong, but brass is far easier to get for the 223, the added velocity is ok as well. The 222 mags will feed 223 just fine. as other stated though 222 was designed for the light bullets so 55 may be as heavy as you can go.

I had a rechambered .222 - .223 Remington barrel. 55gr FMJBT bullets would keyhole; 55gr commercial were fine. Cases were unmarked.

I think you could buy quite a pile of .222 brass for the cost of rechambering to .223. :)

I'm pretty sure that .222s are only 1:12" twist, so heavy bullets are out.

I have a Win. Mod 70 that has been rechambered to .223 from .222. 52 or 53 gr. hollow point boattail match bullits work good in this rifle. I have had 3 out of 4 holes touching on a target at 100 yds. Less than 1 inch groups. Have had no problems with extraction or brass. Lots good enough for shooting them pesky gophers.

Convert a Savage O/U 222 over 20 Gage?????

I have been reading every ones post on reaming out the chamber from 222 to 223. I would like to know if it would work on a Savage combination rifle with a 222 barrel on the top and 20 gage on the bottom?
Do any of you gentlemen think it could be converted?

Thanks
Albayo

The 222 to 223 works great, there are many 222's with shot out throats that were made to shoot like new by reaming them out to 223. A friend has done this to 8 rifles and all shot well.
