Rechamber 308 to 300 wsm?

I have a savage lightweight hunter in 308. I really like the rifle, but would like a bit more punch. I'm thinking about calling a gunsmith to see about having it rechambered, but I thought I would run it passed some of the more experienced folks here.
What say you? Is it even possible? I haven't had any work like this done before.
 
You would need a larger bolt face and I think that the short magnum savage action has a larger shank diameter.

There are a plethora of WSM's on stock shelves these days, sell the savage and buy what you want, way cheaper.

Put a WTT ad up on the EE

Call the gun smith. I'm legitimately interested to hear what he says, and ballpark cost. It's probably prohibitive, but it doesn't hurt to ask
 
As mentioned abouve ... 300wsm has a larger bolt face, just get a new gun, or keep running the rig you have.

As a deer hunter, 300 wsm is my favourite cartridge by a country mile

You're right. The WSMs are dying hard and fast. Lots of new and used FS everywhere.

I'd keep the Savage and buy a 300WinMag. You'll have a better chance selling the 300WM after you realize that the 308 really will work for you after all.

Lol ... 300wsm isnt going anywhere. Its one of the best all around hunting cartridges ever developed. It at one point held the heavy recoil 1000 yard world record ... it still may.

Bunch of guys at my range keep saying that the 30-06 is obsolete ... lol ok. 30-06 isnt going anywhere either
 
Drop the idea like a hot potato . I would also prefer to go with a 300 WM instead of the 300WSM. I have hunted with Remington , Model 742, 308 cal for years and you guessed it , all the deer taken did not know it was 308 or 300 WSM. Inherently accurate round, right out of the box.
 
Ive shot deer with a 165 partition out of a .308, and ive shot deer with a 165 partition out of a 300wsm ... there is a drastic diffrence. I like the 300wm alot, i might be rebarreling my 7mm rem mag into one. I think its a bit big for deer myself.

My 300wsm puts a wicked hurt on bucks

Rebarrel it to a 7-300 win mag. You can shoot 195's over 3100 fps.

Lol ... i had to double check your name, see if you were a buddy of mine. Hes running a 7-300wm and has the reamers. He is running the " 195 bergers" ? And he is getting 3100 for sure. That cartridge is a beast. Hes really been pushing it on me
 
Easy to do. Buy a new barrel chambered in 300wsm from somebody like McGowen, install it yourself or get it done by a gunsmith if you're not confident. Savages have removable bolt faces, you can buy the parts fairly easily for under $100, and a new magazine for the short mags takes care of the feeding problems. Savage wsm rifles are normally built on a large shank action, but guys have done it with standard shank barrels. Check out savage shooters forum for more info.

I'm rebarreling my savage lightweight in 243 to .284 win as soon as the new barrel gets here.

I am pretty interested in it as well. Pretty much the only gun a guy would need
