Fellow Nutz-

Can a 336 be rechambered to anything bigger than .30-30 AI? I am interested in opening one up to 307WIN or 308MX. Can the 336 receiver/action handle this?

If yes, can anyone recommend a smith to do it for me?

Advice much appreciated. Thanks-

PS. I understand the cost issue with rechambering vs. acquiring a different rifle.

Aren't the Marlin 308 MX's built on a 336 action? And the 307 was available in the Win 94, actions are of comparative strength. Should be possible, not sure if you might need to get a different extractor or do anything else to the action.
Ever thought about just trading up to a gun in one of your desired chamberings? With the trade in value, there's probably not much money to be saved by rechambering.

I don't know if the 308MX is built on the 336. I have considered a newer Marlin in 308MX, they are harder to find and I like the look of the older ones. I do not like the 94, so I wouldn't be acquiring one of them, I just like the ballistics of the 307.

It is my understanding that when Marlin adapted the 336 from the .30-30 to the .307, they changed the steel used for the barrels. .30-30s used 1137, .307s the stronger 4140. If this is the case, converting a .30-30 barrel to .307 would not be a good idea.
