Rechambering a SKS

im pretty sure there is another thread on this and they basicly came down to why rechamber it. 7.62x39 is about as cost efective as your gonna get and its never gonna be a 1000 yard gun with out puttingso much $$ into it that your better off starting with a different gun altogether.

The only reason I could see is for hunting purposes, and wanting to go with a bigger case.

You have to remember though that 7.62 x 39 is actually .312 rather than .308 making the barrel slightly large for a .308 bullet which may affect accuracy.

I would also mention that if you want a semi .308 or 30-06 you can always find a used Remington semi for $350-$450 which would likely be a better option, and cost about the same when all is said and done.

That plus on the other hand a .223 would most likely work, since the case length is almost the same, but then it's called for rebarreling.(ak barrel?)

But what for ? The 7,62 X 39 is as cheap as it gets and the SKS was desgined for it...what would a different caliber improve

Guys, I completely agree with all of you. I love the 7.62x39, it's alot of fun. I just think that with the thousands of them in Canada, someone with some tooling and some curiosity has tried something. Successful or not, I'd like to hear about it.

Not gunna look it up right now. Cause I'm on my phone.

But I thought I've read somewhere in the past they sks's were manufactured at one point in .223 (guessing norinco lol)

Coulkd be wrong. But I have read storys of shops selling an sks with 223 and having people complain about split cases. As 223 will chamber and shoot (I haven't tryed it and won't) but won't cycle the gun.

Could of all been a dream. Google it if u want. Just like I said I'm on my phone
I wouldent bother rechambering a sks not worth the money imo

Thanks

Dave

What about a 7.26x39 improved? Sort of like a 303 Epps? Angle the shoulder a little more steeply to hold the gas in slightly longer could result in higher pressures and velocities. I suppose that could also mean high enough pressure to rupture the chamber and or barrel but rumour has it that these rifles are overbuilt to start with so maybe it wouldn't blow up...

And as for the why? For s**ts and giggles that's why.

Shorten a 308 by about .6", neck up to .312 voilà. Done. Alot of work, I know. Not worth it? Yeah. But if I had the tools and know-how, I might spend one of them long winter days to try it. An SKS with a higher case capacity pushing a 150gr soft point. Fun! Expensive...crap

6.5 grendel, sure you need a new barrel, but thats it. based on the 7.62x39 case, so bolt etc remains the same. am building an sks based straight pull single shot around this round right now. so what if its $200 gun, that just means it is no big deal if i screw up the receiver

Not that I've put an ounce of thought into this, but if I thought an SKS would take 308 pressures for a second I'd try it - the bore diameter would simply necessitate using larger diameter bullets, but my issues would be whether the action would take the added pressure and if there would be enough room to fit the larger cartridges.
