I was looking at an old beater Krag sporter recently as a project and my idea was to mount a receiver peep sight on it. Its already drilled and tapped for a sight, but on the right side of the rifle. Seems to me that most mount ontop of from the left. Anyone have an idea what sight it was drilled for and if they can be found these days?

Your Krag probably had a Lyman 48K on it. These mount on the right side. Redfield made a 102K and a 70K both for the Krag but they mount on the left side and require no drilling and tapping. The Redfield 102 only had rough windage and elevation adjustments but the Redfield 70 had micrometer adjustments. All of these sights are long out of production but can be found on Ebay from time to time.

Thanks Mike. It probably was a 48k. I wonder if its easier to get it drilled and tapped for a more modern receiver sight than trying to track down that Lyman.

Personally I would try Ebay for awhile. I don't know if one of the modern Lyman or Williams receiver sights would even have the right radius on the bottom of the sight to mate properly with the Krag receiver. Plus the old rifles kinda look better with a vintage sight to me anyway.

You said that those two redfield models did not require drilling or tapping eh? Any idea on going price for those redfields or that lyman?

Williams makes a 5D for the American krag and an FP for the American Krag and one for the Norwegian Krag. Whats the real difference here? Could I cheap out on a 5D and make it work on a Norwegian Krag? Or would I need to spend another 45 bucks on an FP for the Norwegian?
