uncle gave me his auto loading press but wants me to make him his bullets in exchange, him and the wife mainly shoot 45 LC cowboy loads so what are some good recipes you guys have for that calibre???? right now i have 250 gr lead round nose bullets, not sure who made them , so i was looking in the manuels and was thinking about 8-9 gr of unique to go with them ???or 700x since they gave me 4 pounds of the stuff with there press and bullets and all there equipment

also any good higher pressure/jacketed bullet recipes out there too , my aunt has dreams of hunting deer on her horse with her uberti 45 LC lever gun(she never will, maybe dress up cowboy once), told her well ya should have bought a 44 mag lever gun cause i dont think the 45 is very suitable for hunting ...... or am i wrong ????

thanx for your help

The Hodgdon data site has high pressure load data that reaches 30,000 CUP. Should be good for hunting if you have a firearm that is safe to use those pressures in. I don't know about the Uberti but I know the Marlin 1894's can handle the pressure.
With a 240gr bullet these loads can reach 1400-1500fps which is the same as a 44 magnum with the same weight bullet. Those are pistol velocities.

I think you will be happy with 6.0 to 7.0 grains of 700X. 6.5 works for me.
I concur with Ken Waters on 12.0 grains of 800X with that cast boolit for accuracy and velocity. Neither of those powders meter well or at all but both work exceptionally well at either end of your scale.
a 250 grain bullet from 45 Colt at even 1000fps will stop all but the largest bears in North America; the retained energy is fearsome at moderate ranges.

thanx guys, i love this site, keep em coming, i was gonna go rig up a test /initial batch ,have the dies but no shell holder for my single stage, and im not messing with the dillion yet till i work out some bugs. my uncle can wait anyhow, barely shoots anymore

I guess it depends on what powder is available in your area. For cowboy action, I found Ramshot Competiton to be excellent. 5gr of powder under a 250g bullet makes for a nice manageable and accurate load around 800fps. Its my 'go to' recipe as I had the best results over other attempts.

If the Uberti she is using is one of the 1860's or 1873's then do NOT load up the "Ruger only" high pressure rounds. The link arm designs inside these rifles are not designed to take pressures of much above the 14K CUP peak of the classic .45Colt loads.

The good news is that a 250 gn at the upper end of the standard SAMMI loads from the Hodgdon web site is moving fast enough to punch clean through any but the biggest of deer at the sorts of distances where she would be OK with using the plain iron sights. If she can't be sure of hitting where it'll be a good hit for a clean kill then she's too far away for the bullet as well.

When I look at the load data it is also apparent that cast lead is the way to go even for hunting. The cast loads in NORMAL .45Colt move faster for the same peak pressure. You gotta love that!

Hey Wolf, don't load any hi pressure loads for the 45lc toggle action Uberti's until you make it out here, Ill show you a box of broken toggless and pins and one streched action from others that have!!!

The Uberti lever guns have the reputation of being the best, most dependable Cowboy rifles available and I agree with that wholeheartedly...and they are built with modern metal alloys...but that being said, they are still an 1870's design. I won't use anything that exceeds the pressure of an 1880's black powder cartridge or 800 fps. in mine.

ok , i wont load any 45 too hot for any of there guns. thanx for letting me know guys. i told her about the lever not being able to load very hot. so ill keep it around 7-800. thanx for the recipes too. i found out that my 45 acp really likes the 700x so i switched to that too.
