so, like 18 months ago I went to Canadian tire to buy a large amount of shotgun ammo, they conveniently provided a box, but when I got home, one of the cases was 20g not 12g! I don't have a 20g and don't really feel the need for one, but I did think that I could at least reclaim the lead, either load it as 7 1/2 or melt it down and cast it into something else. I started thinking that I might be able to reclaim the powder as well if I can find out what it is, on that I have had no luck. I was wondering if any gunnutz knew what powder was used in winchester universal 20g 2 3/4" 7/8th 7 1/2 shells

This!! Otherwise it seems like allot of work for not much unless you already reload for shotgun. Are we talking about a box of 25, a value pack of 100 rounds or a flat of 250 shells??? Regardless, 20 GA usually sells for about the same as 12 GA so maybe trade them to someone at your local club??? If they're 71/2 shot, sounds like trap or skeet so likely someone else shooting at your club uses 20 GA.

Many ammo manufacturers use voodoo powders that are made special for them, generally not available for sale.

Reclaiming the shot, sure, but probably easier to just trade/sell the ammo whole.

Your best bet would be to try Winchester themselves. All the best getting any response though. I sent them messages regarding 12 ga shells filled with rather than round shot what looks more like welding slag. All I wanted was to bring it to their attention. Never heard a peep which indicates to me that they already knew or just didn't give a flying F.

I love my 1894 38-55. I do not like Winchester ammo at all and am so far not impressed with their customer support.

Just my 2/5 of a nickle.

+1 on sell them.

My range allows slug only. Opening the casing, getting the lead pellets out, melt/cast to 1oz slugs is a lot of work.

Sell them ot try to see if they will swap them for you. I know here even though you bought them 18 months ago if they still stock them the manager here would do a swap if I told him that story. What have you got to lose to ask. Good Luck

It wasn't winchesters fault just the guy at the couner and me for not paying more attention, they told me absolutely no returns or swaps or whatever on ammo, I "could have tampered with it".

Yes that makes sense if the boxes are open. Been years since I bought any of these but I thought they were sealed and not like a regular shotshell box. Maybe not any more.

Most places I've been usually have a little sign posted somewhere stating ammo sales are final, no returns. This is not unusual. If you have a store manager that's on friendly terms and is willing to do a swap then that's a bonus! The 110 shot value packs I've seen at CT & WallyWorld around here are priced identical between 12GA & 20GA so I would expect someone would be pleased to buy or trade you for them.

Swap or sell as mentioned. Playing with fire if u try to reclaim the powder and not worth the effort. Probably end up trashing it anyways so at least selling or swapping you get something thats useful

you could reclaim shot, possibly wad, and a primed shell if you want to do that. dispose of the powder with a flame

or trade 1 for 1 for 12 GA
