Recoil - am I just being a wimp?

I have a Norinco HP-9, 14" barrel, 7.5 lbs. I shot a bunch of slugs (1 oz., 1600 fps) today trying to zero the sights, and I could only shoot 11 before I had to quit from the pain, and now my shoulder is sporting a nice bruise. Most of my shots were benched to try get as accurate as possible.
Is this kind of pain normal, or am I being a bit of a wimp? Is there some important point I'm missing that will lessen felt recoil, or do I just have to man up?

Shooting slugs off the bench hurts, no doubt about it. Some things you can do include upgrading the shotgun's recoil pad or wearing a strap-on recoil pad. You could also place a bag of shot in between you and the gun. I would just try to zero my shotgun in as little shots as possible. It really shouldn't take too many. Shooting offhand dosn't hurt near as much as on the bench.

I have an HP9 and find the following with the average load:
3" slugs kill the shoulder (offhand or otherwise)
2 3/4" buckshot is still rough but noticeably easier
3" target loads don't bother me at all, I could shoot them all day

+ one one the sandbag for sighting in... but for offhand shooting I think the only good solution may be a Knoxx SpecOps (sp?) recoil reducing stock. I put a speedfeed on my HP9 and it still hurts.

The only time I got my a$$ kicked by recoil was when I was firing 3" rifled slugs and 000 buck from my Mossberg 500 Mariner. Those are powerful, but they take a toll on your shoulder.

I've heard good stuff about the knoxx stock. I just don't want to shell out that kind of cash yet. I have shot several 3 inch slugs offhand before, and I don't remember it being as bad as the 2 3/4 off the bench.

Correct, your body acts as a natural spring. :)

wimp...

jk

They hurt. Short barreled shotgun, what do you expect?

You should try the 13" Backpacker. It's even worse.

It's just the bench. Once you get it sighted in, you'll never need to shoot off the bench again. If they hurt you while you're standing, I recommend a new pad (your buhjina obviously leaked all over the first pad :p)

make sure the stock is properly seated in the "hole" between your pec and your shoulder. Being just half an inch too far out towards your shoulder can bring on lotsa pain for nothing.

I've "fixed" a couple of my buddies habits by showing them that they seating the stock too far out towards the shoulder. My cousin no joke was half an inch off from where he should have been and that's all that was causing all the pain. Once he actually started thinking about it he caught on quick that the recoil needs to go somewhere and if there's bone behind the muscle your seating the gun on its gonna squish lol ... funny thing is he always wondered why I could shoot more than him and not get bruised and beaten.

Take The Pain

Just imagine what the recieving end is going to feel !!! So the trade off is worth it. try different body angles, the more you blade yourself the more the butt rides out of the pocket onto the bicep try less blade and try different things like raising or lowering your elbow to help find the sweet spot.
On the bench don't hunker down too much try more upright so rest the gun higher thus raising your torso this might help too. Just some thoughts.
jack and PS Take the pain buttercup lol !!!!

I've had an HP9-1 with 14" for almost 2 years now and I've never had an issue with recoil. I've shot almost every common load one can think of.

I installed my Knoxx SpecOps folding stock two days ago and haven't been out to use it yet. I'll let you know if I find much of a difference.

I tried to research 12 gauge recoil with slugs, just so I could compare it to my .375 H+H. Confusing, 12 gauge (with slugs) is reported to have between 30% less recoil all the way up to 15% more recoil.

Now I can appreciate why your bruised! Bruising is just your body's way of showing mild discomfort and saying to you "don't worry, I can fix this.......just carry on"!
