Good advice on this thread! I tried shighting in my 870 on the bench on Thursday (15 shots of 3" federal slugs) and though I don't bruise easily I still have some muscle tenderness today. Definitely hurt much more than shooting offhand!
slugs do raly hurt but after shooting my 535 with 3.5 inch turkey loads i do not mind the slugs at all .i like to wear my vest when shooting at a target .if you can not get it so tyou can shot it go see your gun smith and get him to put a shim in the stock .thy can do wonders to make the gun fit you better .and that will realy help with recoil DUTCH
I ported my barrel and found a noticeable differance in recoil. I have also used managed recoil slugs and find it definately more enjoyable if I am shooting a lot with a t shirt on. Since I no longer hunt the managed recoil slugs aren't an issue. I would compare the felt recoil from a ported barrel to be 25% less than non ported. Having the forcing cone done would also help. The Vang comp barrels done by Casey are supposed to be very good and pattern better with buckshot.
A good recoil pad helps a huge amount. Also keep the pad on your bunched up pec muscle and not on your actual shoulder. If shooting off a bench it is natural for the stock to try to ride on onto your collar bone. But then there's not much there to absorb the force and again it'll bruise and hurt. A lower stool to sit on will help avoid having to crouch over to get into place.
