Anybody got software that calculates recoil.
I've got a 35 whelen that weighs 8lb 1oz and am thinking about getting the barrel profiled to reduce weight and move the balance point back a bit. I'm sure we can take 8 oz off, maybe a bit more, but am wondering how much more recoil I'll get as a tradeoff.
I'm normally shooting 250 grain bullets @ 2550, and recoil is not bad at this point.

Thanks for the links guys. Given the numbers, this gun is very manageable, probably due in part to the Bansner stock and Decelerator pad. Feels like a 7 mag (manageable) but I don't think I want to take the 10% more 8 oz less gives me.
 
I've only done a little testing, but sub 1" comes pretty easy. I'll post a pic tonight. Just got a hinged floorplate for it that I'm just about done inletting.
Had a couple teenage boys shooting it this spring. Both found it quite comfortable and neither particularily enjoys recoil.
Did get an assist on a black bear this spring that had been hit with a 25-06 and was down but wasn't finished yet. One shot with the whelen ended that story right away!

Built on an FN action (Husqvarna rifle, model 1000 actually), 22" Douglas barrel, Bansner stock, Bold trigger, hinged floorplate. Got a 1.5x5 Leupold coming for it to finish it off.
Very manageable, but you already know that about the whelens!:)

My Whelen is on an early 50's FN. It has a 23" Douglas barrel #2(Standard Sporter) with a .600" muzzle. Currently it carries a walnut stock. With a Leupold Vari X-II 3-9 X 40 scope it weighs 8 lbs 2 oz.

According to the Douglas Barrel site, this barrel weighs 2 3/4 lbs. Their light sporter with a muzzle diameter of .560" weighs 2 1/4 lb. This barrel would have a muzzle wall thickness of just .101". Is this thick enough??? I don't know, but it might be worth a phone call.

At any rate, I doubt the recoil increase would be a big deal.

I'm currently having a 9.3 X 62 built. When I asked the gunsmith to turn my barrel down to the same profile as my Douglas, he never batted an eye.

Muzzle diam. is approx .670 and is still unfinished at this point. I'm thinking we could probably take off about .050 (leaves approx. .130 thickness) and reduce weight by 6-8oz., and as a bonus, move the balance point back a bit. Something to ponder during the rainy season here!:rolleyes:
 
Now that's a smart looking rifle

The stock must be very light if the rifle only weighs 8 lbs with that barrel.

How are you going to finish the metal when all is complete?
 
Thanks for the positive comments. Stock is 26 oz. painted with the recoil pad. Probably blue the metal, but I've thought about parkerizing. Just not sure it would be "right" with that nice FN action, etc. Rifle comes up very nice, but just a bit muzzle heavy for me.

Rust bluing is nice. Weather resistant too.

Originally, it was teflon coated but that didn't work out(chipped and flaked). For the past two years, it's been in the white while I made up my mind as to finish.

Here's a couple of shots of my recently blued Whelen. This is my first effort and I think it turned out good.
