Hi all,

im thinking of buying a new rifle, and was wondering about the recoil from a 7mm Mag, particuarilly in a light gun. Im considering a Tikka T3 Lite, but am slightly concerned about recoil. The gun wieghs only 6 pounds, 6 ounces.

Then get a model 70 CRF :D have it bedded , floated , and crowned, then you got a rifle to be dangerous with. :D
There are others, a ruger IB would rock.
A Sako hunter , the key is , you need 8-81/2 lb rifle in 7 mil to enjoy it.

I have a 270 Wby in a Sako trg-s which weights about 8lbs for only the rifle, recoil is fine. A 6 1/2 lb 7mm, is going to have a pretty heavy recoil to it.

inside 300yrds a .270 is going to do everything a 7mm mag can. I would suggest getting a .270 if your aim is a light rifle. the moose/deer/bear/etc will never know the difference.

It recoils about the same as a 30-06 will in the same rifle. Maybea bit more recoil on paper....

7RM is a great cartrdge, one of the most popular here in BC.:)

she's gonna buck!! but it's a 7 mag! i have an older winchester ranger, used it for years and didn't mind the kick. i'm not sure but it probably weighs more than a T3 lite. hey i know... buy it... if you find it bucks too bad sell it to me... ya know, now thats it's USED 'n all! ;)

First off its not cut and dry this recoil thing, there are many factors,
design, pad, weight of rifle, bullet, and velocity.
One should never compare one cal to another without taking these into account. I can tell you a rifle under 7 lbs in 7 mag with 150 or 160 grain bullets will kick, and so will a 30-06 with 180's in the same weight rifle.
If your into that sort of thing perfect:D
For example, I like shooting my 375 h&h in 700 remmy , 24 in heavy barrel , off the bags , full house loads . But don't care much for shooting my 06 light weight . Infact it reminded me a time or 2 that I should pay more attention to what I was doing :D

I don't find the recoil from my T3 .300WM is that bad at all (7.5 lbs with scope), however a Limbsaver is a must, the factory pad sucks.

in a T3, with the pad that comes with, I dont think it would be a very pleasant rifle to shoot much. A Limbsaver will make it better. Ive shot a T3 270wsm with a good pad and it wasnt too bad, with 150 grainers @ 3000 fps

I shoot a 7mm remington mag with a Bushie 3200 3-9x40. I don't find the recoil all that bad, but usually when i shoot it its at game, so that might explain it ;)

My 7mm weighs about 8 pounds with the scope.

So its not all that bad, but not entirely fun to shoot either.

It will kick your face clean off :D

Frank is pulling your leg. maybe something else! The recoil is not bad. I have 3 of them at present. Love them all. Get a couple of them and an 06 then you will be looked after.

Dave.

If the gun fits you properly and a good recoil pad and it comes in at 8lbs or more you should be OK. My custom M70 with a Mcmillan stock and decellarator pad at 8lbs with a 3X9 VXII is fine to shoot but it fits me perfectly.

I have a Voere in 7mm RM which is very light..just a plain old plastic butt plate. I've owned it for more than 30 years now. Recoil and muzzle jump were always issues with it. Then, about 5 years ago, I finally tamed it by having a muzzle brake installed. I know there are lots of nay sayers when it comes to muzzle brakes, but the rifle is much more pleasant to shoot now and I am am a much better shooter with it than I used to be. If it's light, pad it well, or put a brake on it. If it's heavy...7 1/2 lbs.+ you should be OK. The 7mm RM is a great cartridge.

Great cartridge. I've got a couple of them. My "goto" Moose rifle right now is a semi-custom Remington 700 BDL in a new LSS laminate stock. It has a break that was installed by the previous owner. I'd originally bought the rifle as donor action, but after the thing started printing sub 1/2" MOA using some extra factory ammo I had laying around, there was no way I was going to pull this one apart! With scope, I guess the whole package runs about 7.5-8 lbs. The break, while a little loud, really tames the recoil. During hunting situations, I can't even remember hearing the blast after triggering a shot at game. Not fun for hunting buddies standing nearby though! :) Took a nice bull moose with this rig last year. If you want to go superlight, as other posters have said, get a good recoil pad like the Limbsaver, Remington R3 or one of the better Pachmayr Decelerators; that or get a muzzle break installed or a combination of the two.

I have a synthetic stocked Savage in 7mm RM. With scope and mounts it weighs 8lbs even. With a scope on it the Tikka will likely be about the same weight. Recoil was pretty nasty wiith the factory recoil pad, switched it for a limbsaver and its easily manageable now.

If you want a good 7mm get it in a Remington 710:p :p :p :p :p That way when you have a fire in the woods you can use it to poke at the fire or to scratch your back.:p :p :p :p :p
