Recoil on a M38 Moisin

Many woman and teens carried this rifle in war. He should be fine. It packs a wallup, but add a slip on recoil pad and all should be good.

My M38 shooter wears one:

Epic fail! Didn't check the range calendar. Got there and the range was closed for IDPA! I think I heard a mental sigh of relief from my kid. Ended up watching the boys shoot for a while and went for Big Macs and poutine after. Got to see guns, smell powder and did not have to soap my toy at the end. Not too bad after all. Will try again soon!
PS. I don't reload yet but good thought on a lighter load. Thanks Skylark!
I hear that the x39 and x54 rounds have amazing muzzle flash. Probably will not see it here as our range is closed at dusk usually and you can't shoot in the wilds 1 hr before sunset anyways.

Thanks EL34. A slip on recoil pad should be a great investment. No alteration to the gun. Are these things universal ie. do they fit all wood or synthetic normal rifle stocks or are they specific to a gun?

This is the exact brand I have on mine. Get size SMALL though. It fits, Mosins, SKS, K31 perfectly. $17 @ Wholesale Sports.

Recoil of:

X54R = 13 pounds

.308 = 17 pounds

We were out with a 110 pound kid yesterday. He shot a few dozen 308 and X54R with no problems. Depends on the kid.

Indeed, have them put their weight forward, hold on tight and if needed fire the first shows with a heavy winter jacket on and see how they do.

Hope your kid becomes a long term shooter and maybe he can get his friends and their families interested as well.

Yup, you don't want to turn off a new shooter, but a good hold and a bit coaching should be no problem.

The rubber recoil pads can cause an accuracy issue if it is loose in the slightest. When shooting big milsurp calibers technique is everything, I don't care what size, if you're holding (whatever) wrong, the rifle will let you know immediately:eek:. A cheek slap or rung collarbone can put a new shooter off shooting for good due to the recoil on most of these guns. We often forget that there was a time in Canada not that long ago where most everyone knew "how" to shoot correctly. There was a rifle range in the basement of my high school...in the '60's it was used often by cadets and militia.

Your kid at 110lbs can shoot any of these calibers no problem, if, he has been taught to shoulder and cheek weld with the appropriate forestock back pressure. If his technique falters...it will hurt.

Someone suggested the Swiss K31 and I'll agree. These are fantastic rifles with a reasonably low recoil cartridge, which equates to accuracy. Very fun to shoot. I wish I had one.

*edit* Although I'm using the term "shouldering" as are others, we understand that the butt is not on or anywhere near the shoulder right!? Pectoral muscle under the collarbone is where the butt belongs.

I suggest what I have. It's called "The Shooters Friend". It's a slip-on pad, almost like a silicon material.
I have a buggered up shoulder and neck, but with this on I can shoot my M44 with T-Shirt fairly comfortably. They're about $30.00.

IMO I
The m38 kicks a LOT less than a 12 ga slug. And standing for sure. Try it, I say. If it's an issue don't' press it.

I wouldn't suggest shooting the m38( or any large caliber) prone for a beginner or small person. Its only funny when its your buddies getting slammed, not new shooters.

Stick to the .223.
He can probably shoot the M38 in the winter (with a heavy coat) but shooting is a sport for fun. Check out how many "one box of shells" .338s there are at your local gun store.
With the steel butt plate, these are not T shirt guns.

If it hurts...
It's a lot cheaper to stay at home and drop and anvil on your foot. Don't need PAL either.

I am so trying to get him into firearms. I even try and recruit his friends but these kids are more interested in video games than real fun outdoors! I wish my folks had gotten me into guns when I was a kid. Everything I learnt, I learnt on my own. Trying to pass it on but not working well so far.....maybe when they get older.
