I just order a USP Custom Sport from Wolverine in .40S&W. It is not here yet, but I am stocking up some ammo.

I have owned a bunch of 9mm and .45s, but never a .40SW. How do the recoil characteristics of the .40 compare the others?

I like the heavy backwards "push" feel of shooting .45. I find the snappy muzzle flip of the 9mm a little irritating.

Well, you better break out the Prozac, Uncle Walt... :D
A perception that many shooters seem to have is that the .40cal S&W is "in between" a 9mm and a .45ACP as far as power and recoil characteristics are concerned. The first time I fired a .40 was in my new Glock G35. I initially thought that there was something wrong with it as the very sharp recoil "snap" with the Fiocchi ammo I was using was so unexpected.
I would imagine that a H&K USP would handle the muzzle flip a bit better than a G35. I fired a 9mm H&K and it was a pussy cat with that cartridge.
IAE, you will get used to it very quickly...;)

Well having shot 125gr .357 SIG / 185gr .40S&W several weekends ago... the 185 .40S&W reminded me alot of a 200gr .45ACP (very similar)

The .357SIG is fun...but hurt my trigger finger after a while from the incredibly fast snap (it was like whiplash on my trigger finger ...hehe) with that said I still like the .357SIG.

I got bad news for you. The 40 snaps more than the 9mm.
I also prefer the push of a 45 to the snap of a 9mm.

Easy way to get around it is to reload with a nice mild 40 recepie.

No question, you are not going to like the recoil on the 40....particularly in a light gun like the H&K...
It's not bad in an all steel gun, like a stainless 226 or an SVI though...
other than these platforms I really don't care for the calibre... love my 9MM and 45 ACP though!;)

I shoot .40 almost exclusively. In a heavy gun like my STI Edge it isn't snappy at all. In my glocks it's minor pf all the way, which is nice to shoot. Major .40 in the glock is pretty snappy. You will probably find it snappy in the HK as well. If you have the means, try loading it down!

I shot some mild reload's through Gorky's STI Trojan .40SW a couple of weeks ago, and I was quite impressed. If I keep my HK I will definitely be doing some reloading for it.
