So I just picked up a Beretta S56E O/U from tradex this week to start skeet with. The gun is beautiful, points nicely and is very light, but only has a piece of what looks like either leather or phenolic as a buttplate. My shoulder got pulverized after the first round of shooting and made my Winchester Ranger feel like a pussycat. Going to be bruised up good for a week.

So I'm going to be getting a recoil pad put on it but was wondering what kind would be the best type to go with? I would not mind adding about 1/2 to 3/4 to the LOP either. What kind of pad are you guys shooting with on your light guns?

A few years ago I bought a 12 gauge pump with a rifled barrel for deer hunting. My goal was to shoot the high velocity sabot slugs. I tried to sight the gun in and shot 10 slugs (didn't realize my scope was malfunctioning) and I felt like my fillings were rattling out of my teeth. At the same time my brother was sighting in his Tikka T3 stainless in 7mm rem mag. I would shoot 10 rounds of the 7mm 165gr in between the 12 gauge sabots just to give my shoulder a rest. I bought a Limbsaver for the 12 and it made a heck of a difference. Not so punishing. I highly recommend Limbsaver. I actually just bought one for my new 300wsm.

Thanks guys, I'll have to check out the stores to see if they have any that I can get fitted. Might have to bring it to the smith since I dont have a sanding disk at home. Looks like it will cost me about $35 bucks plus fitting, not too bad.

I put in an order for the Pachymayr old english style in brown, hopefully I can get it fitted this week. Had my O/U double on me (probably flinched on the trigger), boy did that ever wake me up! My shoulder is killing me now, haha.

Another vote for Kick-Eez.

But it's probably closer to $50.00 plus installation. Still very much a bargain if it means you shoot more comfortably.

Over the years, I've tried virtually every brand of pad out there. The 3 most popular seem to be Pachmayr, Kick-Eez and Simms (Limbsaver)

My own preference is for the Pachmayr Old English Decelerator.

I find the Kick-Eez a little too "sticky" and a couple of Limbsavers didn't stand up too well.

Thank's for the advice, I'll see if the Pachymayr does the trick. Anyone know if there is much difference in the amount of cushioning between the .600 and the .800, or is the difference just a solid spacer?

airic84 I have installed hundereds of recoil pads for every kind of heavy hitter out there, I will let you know that Kick Eases are way to soft and its hard to get a quality finished result in my opinion, I highly recomend a Pachmyer decelerator or better yet for a shotgun of quality a Old English! If you are not worried about weight a recoil mercury reducer will make you feel like you shot a round with a 22 rimfire instead of a 12 gauge. If you are stuck in getting a pad fitted in your area or a recoil reducer fitted, give me a PM and see I can help you out. Dale in T-Bay

Thanks for the heads up. I have the old english decelerator on order at my local range, going to give it a try fitting it. Might be a little while though since I have to bring said O/U to the smith to diagnose some occasional doubling. If I have any trouble I'll try and remember to fire off a PM your way.
