I am on my way to the local gunshop in a little while and I am still undecided what to put on my Ruger M77 .270. Do I go with something like the stock pad or should I go for something like the Limbsaver recoil pad? Its not a range gun, I use it for varminting and deer. Any opinions would be helpful.

I have always wanted a "quality" aftermaket recoil pad for my M77. Never felt the $40.00 price tag was quite worth it, plus you have to sand to fit. I found a good "slip on" pad at Canadian Tire for $8.00. It works well and does what it is supposed to. The bonus is with the hard Ruger pad on and the slip over one I have an extra 1" LOP. I have long arms so my rifle even fits better. Since you are not shooting alot of ammunition hunting this may work for you. It may be worth the $8.00 to try one.

Thats a good suggestion but I am in the process of a stock refinish and am looking to replace the fixed pad with something that looks a little better than the factory red/orange thing.

I have guns outfitted with Limbsavers, and some with the Pachmayr Decelerator. Both 'prefitted' and grind to fit models.

For a range gun, I chose the Limbsaver. It's soft and pliable and really soaks up the recoil. In my experience, however, it DOES have a tendancy to get snagged on clothing, as the rubber really is quite soft.

If I were going with a pure hunting gun, I'd go with a grind-to-fit Pachmayr. It's not AS recoil reducing as the Limbsaver (in my experience), but the rubber is firmer and less likely to snag.

The pre-fit ones (Limbsaver or Pachmayr) always leave a BIT of gap or overhang, and if you're refinishing the stock, you don't need to be too careful when grinding. :)

Thanks guys. I just got back from the shop and have decided to go with a Pachmayr RP200. Its .500" thick,(same as the factory one) in black with a white line. I opted to have the gunsmith install it for me and then I will continue the refinish process from there. I am sure it will look good and am happy that LOP will be the same as before without cutting the stock.
