recoil pad shaping

I have mounted a universal fit recoil pad on a stock with a good finish . I wan't to shape it to the stock without damaging the stock. My plan for now is to tape the stock to protect it and be careful. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there a better way to do this?

I removed the metal butt plate and used it to sand a soft piece of pine (with a belt sander) to the same curve. I then traced the outline of the butt plate on the wood and cut it out...sanded it smooth. I had an exact copy of the last inch or two of my stock.

I then shaped the recoil pad on the copy..

The original butt plate is plastic . but this is a good idea for future project . I will have to remember this one

Tape and a belt sander is easiest.
