My range partner and I were having a discussion about this the other day, I have a really soft recoil to be specific the pachmayr triple magnum pad, Yea its soft, so soft if I rest my rifle on it for to long it will ruin it. He on the other hand has a light weight field style, much much firmer. Both guns are very accurate for magnum 30 cals, mine being a 300 rum and his being a 300 weatherby. 600 yard groups are usually 3+- .5 inchs with the occasional 2 thrown in HURRAY. Both guns are heavy 10lbs plus with muzzle brakes. I shoot 210g bergers, he shoots 200g accubonds

His theory is that I have difficulty applying the same pressure every time making my shooting inconsistent

My theory is that as long as I pull the rifle in with the same pressure, no matter what shooting position I am in (ie prone, bench ect...) the recoil pad will conform comfortably to my shoulder. Also with it conforming to my should it makes any deflection of the angle of my shoulder or collar bone negligible.

What are your thoughts on this? Experiences? how do you like your pad to fit? Do you think my big soft pad could reduce accuracy or repeatability?
