Hello Guys,

well I am back here in NB and I stopped at the Gun Dealer in McAdam on Friday. I was asking him about Ruger #1s when the next thing I know I have ordered a #1H stainless in 375 H&H.

I want to install a better recoil pad than what comes on it and I was wondering what I should get to aborb the most recoil without going to some sort of mechanical device. I saw the Pachmyer Magnum pads in a catalogue, but I also saw the Limbsaver ones also. Which one of these aborbs the most recoil? i am going to have it fitted by Jason Spencer out in Ottawa, so pre-fit means little to me.

I am also trying to figure out what to put on it for a scope. I am thinking around the 2-7 power range with a min 32MM objective. Does anybody know of any scopes like this with a large eye relief (min 3.7") and for around $500 or less?

My last point is that to mount this scope I am going to need rings, which it comes with but they are high. I was reading an article that said to mount the scope on a #1 as low as possible on the tropicals to help with the cheek weld which will help with recoil managment. I have a set of blued medium height ones, color doe not bother me, but i was wondering if a set of low would work also. What do you guys think I should use?

Thanks,

Corey

I've used both and they both work well. I *think* I like the Pachmyer best. :D

I use a 1.5-5 Vari X III on my 375. Anything in that range shoudl be good. 2-7 isn't abad choice, and one of the Leupolds shoudl work for you.

Ruger rings are IMHO pretty damn good. I love that they have an integral mount system and they come wiht the gun. I've lapped all the ones I own, but that is being picky.

I'd try them out before buying new rings. They may be fine.

I had Leupold low gloss rings on my RUger No1-H tropical 416 rem, they worked GREAT

for a scope I'd go with the Leupold VXII 2-7x33mm

for a pad you can't go wrong with either the Limbsaver R3 pad or the Pachmayr Decelerator :D

I have the Leupold 1.5x5, 1x4. They are both lightweight, stong, have long eye relief, take low rings, and are very bright in low light

If I was scoping your new rifle I would use the either the 1.5x5 or 1x4. I have a 375H&H in the works and am going to use the 1x4 on it when it's done

You should order the ex-low rings with the rifle to get a break on the price  Those rings would be perfect with the two above mentioned scopes, given the lowest possible eye position.

Thanks for the info guys, it has helped me make most of my decisions.

I will probably end up going with the Pachmyer recoil pad; I have one on another rifle and it works well. I was looking to see if anyone would tell me that the new Limbsaver ones are much better, which nobody realy has.

I will try the medium rings I have at my place now, if they are too high I will order the low ones.

I was thinking about the leupold VX-II 2-7x33mm already, i just wanted to see if anyone else had some ideas. I saw the Browning 2-7x32mm scope in the lebarons catalogue for about $150 less with the same eye relief; does anyone have any opinions on them?

Cheers,

Corey

It may be too far down in the quality and/or "pride of ownership" ratings for many, but I have a Bushnell Legend 2-7x on one of my 99's. It's clear, bright, seems to be holding "0", offers 3.5" of ER, and was very economical to purchase. I guess time will tell whether it's "cheap" or not.

The Browning is a Bushnell-made scope somewhere between the 3200 and 4200 series, and priced accordingly. That being said, I don't like Bushnells.
