Recoil pads

You bring a rifle to the shoulder with a soft rubber pad compare to a hard one or a plastic but plate and the soft rubber pads are not as smooth to come up, catches/grabs a bit more the clothings I find!
There are several recoil pads for shotguns on the market that have a hard section on the comb to mitigate that .
They work well for rifles as well.

I only have one rifle with a limbsaver. It works great, but has that gummy bear texture, which is unorthadox to my favorite recoil pad, the Pachmayr decelerator.

The Pachmayr pads don't seem to be readily available where as the Limbsavers seem to have many popular models available amdbready for shipping in Canada.

I'm a fan of both the Limbsavers and Decelerators. I have both on multiple rifles. The Limbsavers are definitely a bit squishier, I have on my Tikkas and a Browning X-bolt. I'm also partial to the good old Bell and Carlson Medallist stocks, just a solid (if a bit heavy) synthetic, and they ship with Decelerators.

I have an old Winchester pad that I pulled off a Model 70 from the early '90s, it has a Goodyear logo on it.

Those Old English are my all time favorite. There might be better but they are very good pads and look good on a classic gun.

Thats for sure!

If its modern synthetic, I like the Limbsavers, but like you said, wood or a classic rifle? Old English is hard to beat.

I didn't cut the stock.

Bought a softer recoil pad for my Remington 700 Classic in 30 06 circa 1989 , but have yet to install . I might have to get the stock shortened but for some reason that just bothers the hell out of me .
Guess I’ll probably just put up with the stock Remington pad that came with the rifle and if I need to do a lot of shooting to try out other ammo I’ll just wear a thicker coat

There are custom fit pads out there.
Take one off and put one one on.
The fit is acceptable.
I think they offer half thicknesses as well.

As Shell Buzzy says’ “ Why don’t you give it a try?”

I have and use both prefit and grind to fit LimbSavers on some of my rifles (usually the heavier recoiling ones), as well as the Decelerators. I like them both! I do find that the LimbSaver does provide more felt recoil reduction on the heavier or sharper recoiling rifles. Colour may also influence your final decision.
Your LOP will determine which is best, and whether or not you will need to alter the firearm to make it work for you.
If it is a collectible, you may not want to alter the stock to make it fit, and a slip on may be an option.
Both are good, and both have their pros and cons.
Only you can determine which will best suit you and the firearm you want or need to install it on.

Does anyone have any experience with the Backfire-backstop recoil pads? At $80 USD they're pricey though they allow the ability to have a pad built to suit your specific stock, rifle weight, caliber and use of brake/ no brake.
