Recoil Question: 308 vs 30-06

I guess it comes down to what would you like to shoot with it, if the game is larger, you may want to use heavier bullets in which case the larger case will be superior
 
I own two Tikka T3's in those calibers Nd I can say for a fact the .308 is a pleasure to shoot. The 30-06 has me in pain after about the 5th shot. It's kicks harder than my 45-70 GBL.
 
My only problem with 30-06 is that you get into long actions, which on the BLR's i think looks kinda silly. I much prefer the looks of the short action levers.
 
I know its not what you asked, but try a tikka t3 in 6.5x55 swede. the swede kills like a 30-06 but recoils like a 243. Lots of penetration from the long bullets.
 
Thanks for the advice guys, more to it then I originally thought. Sounds like the recoil on the two may be similar because of the heavier weight of the '06 (with the '06 still probably barking a little harder), but the shorter action of the .308 would make it nicer to shoot. Has me leaning towards the 308.

Never really thought of it, but how would the leaver action of a short and long action differ? Does the lever on the long action require a longer movement to eject a shell, making it kinda awkward?

You have to forgive me, I only own a couple of guns (no levers) and I'm by no means an expert.

My Sako Bavarian Carbine in 30-06 has pretty stout recoil. I think the rifle weighs 7 lbs. I have owned other 308's and they seem milder in comparison.
I also owned a Brno combination gun (12 ga/ 30-06) and I also recall the 30-06 recoil to be pretty stiff in comparison to my 308's.
 
As has been stated, if you are looking at the BLR get the short action. The long action BLR is heavy, awkward and longer. Might as well get a bolt .30/06 as the BLR in .30/06 in my opinion.
